What kinda of economy do other people get out of their GEN3's?

I haven't been able to gauge mine very well yet. First tank i got about 350-380k's from about 50-60litres. Then i got around 500+ks on the trip to Echuca on a tank.

Now i have Filled up and the Little dash gauge reckons I'll get about 450ks out of this tank... Just curious thats all

Not related to your Q but...........
Common fault with age:
Guages play up VT - VZ, show 1/4 when empty, trip meter shows 60+klms to go.

Hi MRLXSS,

Congratulations on your purchase, the LS1 in stock form are a good motor, but I am on my third LS1'd car and, and despite what Holden say's about them fixing all the problems with piston slap and oil usage, after the VT, I have had two VX's and currently have a VY, and they have all been big oil burners and noisy cars, so please keep any eye on your oil level, i check ours weekly and have to add a litre every 1500km to it.

Also with the 6 speed, we are on our second clutch in a year, there is a problem with the factory pressure plate collapsing, and once it has collapsed, your stuck, it gives no warning and no second chances, you can't just buy a pressure plate, you need to buy a new flywheel, bolts, clutch plate & pressure plate as a kit. Once our warranty finishes and if i keep the car i will be fitting a textra clutch.

Also, if yours has a LSD, and the oil hasn't been changed recently, they chew the clutches out real quick, so regular oil changes are good, there is also a friction modifier they put in the oils if the diffs get a bit clunky/grabe as with the oil in the gearbox, it needs to be changed quite regularly and uses ATF, ours in both was pitch black with minimal km's and it has lowish km's and has been babied around all it's life.

In sydney driving, ours goes through 20-25L/100km, on the open road I have managed to bring it down to 10L/100km or thereabouts, however my CV8 used to average 17L/100km in the city and it was auto go figure.

All in all, they have plenty of power, and with a LS1 edit go better and have better economy, if you really want it too boogie, grab some C4B heads, cam, larger throttle body & computer and that bumps them up to around 300kw with the right exhuast.

Enjoy.

Thanks BCR42Y!

I'm not sure I'f mine chews much oil. Because I just did an oil change on it (I think it was about 5-10,000ks overdue!) And the oil level was still good, But the condition of the oil wasnt the best (Which makes me realise it probably was in there for too long) But as you say, i will make sure i check it reguarly!

Funny you say that about the Clutch, Because the guy i bought it off said Gearbox got replaced under warranty, and also the pressure plate. So Hopefully I dont have an issue with that. (How much is it to upgrade to something better?)

Mine is an LSD, I think i might get some new oil for it on the way home from work tonight. Should I just run standard Penrite LSD Diff oil or something? Or should I get some of that friction modifier at the same time to be safe?

I also need to change the Gearbox oil, Just to be sure that everything is in order there. I read in the Oil manuals in autobahn that they use Dextron 3? Is that right?

I am planning to get the Mail Order Tune as soon as possible, as i have heard amazing things about them! and anything to improve Power and economy has to be good!

Rodomo: So far the Gauge actually seems to read lower than it is. The Ute has a 70 Litre Petrol tank, First Fill up when it was on Empty i could only squeeze in 50ish Litres, Second Fill up when i pushed it a bit more to empty i got 56 Litres. On the last fill up i had only 30k's to empty and i managed to get 61litres in!

lol ... i found that my vz runs out of fuel at 22kms past "0 km till empty" :) i think 68ltrs is the most i've put in it!!

ok on to the springs ... yes they are Kings ...

some measurements i took from the line between the bottom of the car and the body kit ... the one that is the bottom of the door and is the same the whole way along the side...

before
front bumper - 185mm
front door - 290mm
rear guard - 330mm

after
front bumper - 200mm
front door - 290mm
rear guard - 300-303mm

i used to have real problems coming up our driveway with the front bar scraping, this helped just enough to stop it 99% of the time ... not a problem in my new house :)

just a note, i did get another spring first which was the same height but it wasn't a heavy duty spring and it made the ass end softer, especially with stuff in the back .... so thats why i went to this one which i think is pretty much on par or slightly stiffer than the FE2 springs.
as for fuel economy i get about 10-12Ltrs/100km around town and high 8's to low 9's on trips ....
i have the 190kw v6 with 5 speed auto :tease:

Good Stuff Sammy! Thanks for that! I checked out the Kings Springs Website last night, And the KHRL - 127 is a lowered spring for the VU-VZ utes! So thats the ones i will be getting! And by the looks of it, it lowers it just the right amount that i am after!

I dont know if I'll run the Tank to 22k's past distance to empty! LOL Thats a bit keen for me! (Actually i probably will when i am flat broke! LOL)

Does anyone know of any other (Cheap) Mods I can do to improve power and economy? LOL I am thinking about getting an exhaust put on it, mainly just to hear it a bit better, Any ideas (Orangelj, you should know Mr Exhaust!)

No problems.

This is the brand clutch I was looking at;

Textralia

I was leaning towards the OZ700 - X-Grip Series as my wife also drives the car and didn't want the pedal to get to hard for her. I think it was going to be $1400 or so all up for parts.

With the diff oil, I used Catrol LSX90, and didn't put in any friction modifier, however as I mentioned earlier the diff oil was black which I was told indicates the clutches are worn, it's also started knocking around a bit since the installation of the newest clutch, and am taking up the replacement of the diff with Holden.

With the gearbox oil, again it was Castrol, I used dexron 3 as per the owners manual. When I spoke with holden I was advised that the gearbox takes approximately 4.5 litres, but you can only get 4 litres in before it starts pouring out of the fill plug, I then had to remove the sensor on the other side of the gearbox and add the additional 500ml's, after the oil change the box felt so much better. you might want to double check the amount of oil with your local Holden dealer.

I don't know much about the mail order tune you are referring too, I know a local guy that does LS1 edit here in Sydney.

Alrighty, exhaust wise, you have a few options, the first would be the cheaper one-

$700 for a cat back 3 inch exhaust system (supply and fit) there are two types with cat back systems, both share a common centre section, but you can run a striaght through pipe, or you can have an exrta muffler to keep the noise down.

To make it effective though, you need to really have 2 1/4 engine pipes fitted (make sure they cut the cat pipe close to the housing as the engine pipe is sleeved into the end of the cats) You can use the std cats as they are pretty decent.

The whole hog would be a set of pacemakers and full system (using the normal cats from memory) and that supplied and fitted is $1800.

My mums car is running the cat back system with a straight through rear section and modified engine pipes. sounds good (leakey commented on it when we went to his house)

We have the rear section with the extra muffler as a spare for long trips (can get a bit droney)

Sweet mate!

I have read elsewhere about getting the extra 500mls in the gearbox. Something to do with the rear reverse housing or something... I might tackle that on the weekend as well.

I am changing the Spark Plugs this weekend too, I worked a way around spending the $240 on Premium Spark plugs. I purchased some Standard 350 Chev (I think) and Gapped them to 1.5mm. This way they are all but identical to the Iridium plugs, I just have to change them every 10-20,000k's. 8 of these plugs cost $32, compared to $240, so even if they dont work, I'm not loosing that much on them!

So once i have Changed the sparkies, Diff and Gearbox Oil, I can turn off the 170,000k Service light that displays on the dash at start up!

The Mail Order Tune is something i Read on the LS1 forums, I think it is done By Chipmaster in WA, I pay my money and a deposit, He sends me a tuned PCM express post, I fit it to my car. Then Send back my old PCM to him and get my deposit back. He offers 100% Money back gaurantee if i am not happy with the results. There is about 20 pages of a thread from various people saying its the ducks guts! For $400 you cant really go wrong.

He Said "Fuel economy on the highway can increase by between 1-2l/100km on the hwy , power with a good exhaust will increase to approx 290kw , premium fuel will be required for this."

After our warranty finished, I was looking to go DiFilippo as I understand he is a specialist in the field, in saying that it all depended on our budget also, have not priced one of there systems yet;

Difilippo

no need for anythign overly fancy.

We use Redback systems. Never had any dramas and they are on all of our daily driver cars (my VT, mums VX, oldboys VU,brothers VY)

Quality is great, as is the price.
