As title suggests what are the Holden Crewman utes like?

I have never really looked at one before but am thinking it might be OK as a daily driver. I am a single guy and rarely have more than one other person in the car with me at a time. I reckon they would be fairly tiny in the back similar to a dual cab hilux but very similar to a Commodore in the front with plenty of leg-room.

Can adults fit OK in the back as sometimes I take a trip to the drags/car shows occasionally and need to fit a couple of guys in the back for extended periods ...

I dont really need the ute side of it, but hey, it always does come in handy not having to wait for a mate with a ute to do some things around home occasionally.

I would "drive before you buy".
Regardless of leg room, the utes are difficult to guage when reversing as you can't see the back of the car in the mirror due to the curve in the quarter panels.
The crewman is longer again.

the rear seat is very vertical and uncomfortable, the tray is to small, and there ugly :tease:

a wagon may suit your needs better, and they have a higher towing rating than a sedan and a ute (non crewman)

You don't realise how long and cumbersome they are until you try to park one of the bastards! The tray is also quite small compared to a regular ute, around 2/3 - 3/4 the length.
That being said, when i a VY-based SS one for sale for $17k i nearly jumped at it..

Hi Guys.

I had one of these on loan when they were first released. Reversing was the biggest headache.

The tray was bigger than Jap dual-cabs & the rear seat is also better than I expected. They drive
(forward) like a Commodore, no problems there.

For day-to-day use I would get a wagon, unless you really needed a tray & the extra gross weight capacity.

Hi All,

I have had a VZ SS Crewman for 15 months and yes they are a pain to see out the back of and you can't lower them because of the tailshaft hitting the plastic tank and putting a hole in it. I ended up buying an aftermarket tank from CAPA in S.A and lowered it down to wheel height so it fixed the problem. The other issue is the diff, i have had 3 centres and a complete housing from axle to axle replaced under warranty and it still makes a whining noise. Holden just dont know what the hell they are doing with it.

Other than the above the car has been great but it is not everyones cup of tea.

Cheers,

They can have diff problems, but only if not set up properly. A good diff place will know what they're doing, a Holden service dept probably won't. Great car. If reversing is a problem, just get sensores fitted.

No, they will prevent YOU from making it shorter by backing into something.

I have a vy crewman as a work ute and drive it everyday. Parking and reversing is the worst thing with them until you get use to it. I have reverse sensors and is a MUST! The rear seats are like 90 degree therefore uncomfortable, wouldnt want to be sitting in the back for very long. Mines done 120,000kms and never has a major problem or diff change.

Mine fitted in my garage, fitted easier than my 2011 SR5 with bullbar. I have to take the tow tongue and rear step off the Hilux for it to fit. The Crewman will look little compared to a Ranger or Ram.

You won't have any issues with parking. My Hilux fits most places, only width and height limit sometimes. Crewman is smaller in both dimensions and shorter.

Yes, I fitted an Eclipse AVN726EA to both it and my V2 CV8 and both my 2010 and 2011 Hiluxes had them. Never nose park again.

There are very cheap options today that are Apple or Android enabled and have good cameras.
