Does anyone know anyone who can fix bonnet hinges which are stuffed because the pins have corroded? My bonnet now sits to the side because one pin has corroded since electroplating them. One of the pins lost some thickness due to corrosion which has created an unwanted freeplay in the hinge, which kicks it to the side, making it difficult to close and line up straight.

Is this a uncommon problem or has anyone else had this occur to them?

I don't think it's an uncommon problem. I was advised not to electroplate the hinges because of the problem you're experiencing. So I powder coated the hinges and chromed only the springs.

I will find this toranamat you speak of. Would it be 69 toranamat?

It looks like I might have to do a step by step guide on this as I strongly believe I am the only one to ever take the plunge and rebuild my bonnet hinges. My car domain page used to have a pretty good step by step process but I changed that a few years ago since only a couple of people showed any interrest.

I have finally managed to get my CD back from my mate with a heap of my old Torana photos on it since this topic came up last time and it probably has just enough photos of the bonnet hinges for me to do a step by step guide.

Sorry I don't have any spare pins - I only had 1 set made up.

I do still have the old pins I drilled out if you need some samples and I have the special alloy tool I made to protect the head of the new stainless pins as I peened them over.

The pins really are quite simple to make just fiddly and time consuming because you need 14 for a pair of hinges - I wonder how much it would cost to get batch of 140 pins made by a machine shop.

I'll try to do a write up on this this weekend if I get a chance.

I replaced the rivets on my bonnet hinges with stainless bolts that I turned down on a lathe. The pins can be adjusted or removed via a nylock nut.

I did the same on the hinges on my LJ. I found that the pins and the hinges were worn.

Pictures of the hinges and bolts. You have to start with a good set of hinges as the both the hinge and rivet wear out. I did it this way so the hinges could be chromed, polished and then assembled.

The bolts were made in about 1992 so it is all a bit hazy now. The only size I can give you is the bolt had a 13/16" head and was about 1" long. The holes in the hinges where reamed to make them round again and then each bolt was machined to suit the hole.

Hmmmmmm.............I wonder if seat belt bolts could be used?
They have a big head and a stepped shank.

I did pretty much the same but I drilled out the holes in the hinges to match the bolt size as these holes where elongated.

Well since I last chatted about this and promised a tech article, I have done 120m of fencing around my yard to keep the stinkin' dog in and dug out a bloody huge ironbark stump from the middle of the back yard- what a bloody huge job that was.

Anyway here it is.

Go to the bottom of page 1 for a breif update on the car itself too for those interrested.
