why dont you just go and buy a 304 starter motor, theyre pretty good quality and are actually cheaper then standard 308 starters and to top it off they appear to be high torque. well the one i bought is and i believe i only bought a stock 304 starter motor

cheers adam

just use the 304 one from the vr upwards commodore, theyre high torque, and are small and compact, mines been going for 3 years, never faulted and the heat doesnt affect it either,

FYI:

The Bosch part number is BXH136 for the factory Holden style starters (these are a 1.4kW small, high-torque starter motor) - as fitted to VN, VP, VR, VS and VQ 5.0 litre Commodores. Bolt straight up to the earlier 253 and 308 engines if you have extractors fitted. (I tried fitting one to my 253 with standard factory exhaust manifolds, but it just fouled).

I do know a lot of guys running them though on their hot 308's with pretty high comp - no problems at all. Bosch also sell 2 knurled bolts if you don't have them already.

And if you want to go all-out, you can also fit a heat-shield off a later model Commodore - this is what Sam (Liam) did on his stroker. Came up like a dream. I can't remember what model this came off though.

Good memory Brett!

Heat shield was from a VZ, 99% sure. Both have worked beautifully for the 2 years I've had them in, no probs with the starter turning over my high comp motor, the previous cheap n nasty lasted about 2 months.

Cheers,

p.s whos this Liam bloke you are talking about, :D

any gen 3 heatshield for the starter motor fits perfectly on the 304 starter, works a treat, just clips over the solenoid,

My recently purchased LH 5 Litre has a similar issue since day 1 with failing to crank after 1hr of running on a hot day (35+).  Let it cool down and no problem.  I suspected the ignition switch but that checked out and was about to buy a new starter motor when I saw the posts about the heat shield.  Will try that and see how it goes as there is definitly no issue when its just warm.  Surprised that engine heat would impact such a high current device.  Should be pretty easy to test in the current Melb summer.

Gents,  is anyone using Pacemaker headers with their 304 starter and if so are there any clearance problems.  Cheers Ron

13:1 Compression here. Running standard Bosch 304 starter with no issues....touch wood...

Its allot smaller then the 308 one I originally had. Solenoid is just in a slightly different place is the only thing I noticed. (original starter was with the car when I bought it so not 100% sure what it was off)

I still use the factory starter. Turns the 383 with 11.3 comp and hyd roller over just fine. The CAE 1.75 inch primary Tri Y pipes clear it well. Never had a problem with hot starting which may be the result of HPC coated pipes and good earth connections from engine to chassis. Battery is in the boot.

Just wondering how you earthed the block, was it a direct lead to the battery? Through the interior or under?

Block to chassis x2 with big cable. Battery is earthed to boot area.
