LJ GTR - Seat belts

Hi there,

I require some seat belts for an LJ GTR, but front and rear.

Does anyone have any pics of what these look like, particularly the buckles etc.

Hi Nicole
I'm no expert but believe you will have to find out what state your LJ was built eg;(Brisbane,Adelaide)they had different buckles for each state.I haven't got any pics but the other guys on the forum may help.

Hi Nicole

There is no central depository for this kind of info. There are a few books that cover some aspects of the Torana's history and development but a lot of the info has been proven to be incorrect or at least in dispute.

The best place for info is right here at GMH-Torana. The best info is provided by people who own an 'original' car of the same series, model, production date and factory as your own car.

A case in point - the LJ seat belts. There were different makers and style depending on the year and factory. There was a change to the Adelaide belts in '73 but you can only establish that date by process of elimination as owners post.

Thanks Bazza,

Mine is a 72 model, so it would be safe to assume its the big one?

If this is the case and, if i can get my hands on some buckles, is there any way to recondition them?? I think i have seen some which look pretty yuck but are exactly what i need.

If not, is there anywhere you can buy these? I have seen some on rare spares, but i cant figure out which ones i need, they all look the same!

One more thing, can you tell me if the sun visors are the same out of an lc and an lj? and if the lj gtr are the same as standard?

Which book is it that you are getting all this info out of? I think i'll need to get myself a copy!

Hi Nicole,
Bazza is correct with the seatbelt info. Adelaide '72 LJ's had RMP big buckle belts with metal cap adjusters and 'GM Press' as the decal. The same belts were in the previous year but with the Holden 'Lion' as the decal. These belts can be used swapping the decal as RSP makes a new decal.
Sunvisors were all the same in '72 as the soft ribbed grain in all LJ's. Previously the were thin hard edged in the LC and most of these had roebuck grain like the seats.
A local guy in Melbourne deals in these belts both original and recoed, his name is James Van Buuren and you can contact him on 03-95056404.

Ok, Here lays my problem.........

I own a 08/72 Adelaide built LJ XU-1, completed on the 04-08-1972. When i purchased my car it did not have the original seat belts in the front (Aftermarket Replacements) which is pretty common. However in the rear it still has which i believe to be its original seat belts, similar to those pictured below but with black webbing.

I will try in the near future to see if there is any dating on my rear seat belts.......

Does anyone else own a very original 6th, 7th, 8th or 9th month 1972 plated Adelaide built LJ Torana which still has its original belts intact ???

Your help would be much appreciated.......

G'day Bruce

My early June 72 Adelaide built car still has its original seat belts.
( Unless they were changed in the initial 4 years before I became its custodian in 1976.)

All buckles front & rear are the large RMP type with " press " logo.

Thanks for your help Nitter, thats an awsome picture of 1973 Adelaide rear seat belts. Thanks JR, (wingnut) for your info. Thanks Bazza. I removed my rear seat belts on the weekend and checked the dates. I was sure they were the orginals but i was wrong. They were dated 11-5-73 and cant possibly be correct for a 08/72 car. Looks as though i now need a full set of the larger buckles for both front and rear to nicole...............

In your last photo you can see where the top cover folds down with two little tabs at the sides, just get a flat head screwdriver etc and gently flex those tabs forward (without bending them) and then you should be able to remove the top cover.

just had a look, the cover actually returns into the area where the buckle goes about 10mm.

Appears the raised section of the buckle (contains the press button) may slide/press (with force) onto the base? Perhaps it comes apart by pressing the raised section back towards your thumb? Your decision if you wish to chance destroying one.

That's quite a collection of new XU1 battery retainers you have there Brian.

thanks Dave, I did give it a tap today but maybe not hard enough. Try again tomorrow, this is a spare I picked up today at a swap meet along with those battery retainers.
