Hi guys!

I have installed an EFI 5L (from an automatic VS SS) into my friends VH commodore, along with an oldschool TH350 transmission. Im up to the stage where it could be started if all the wiring is correct.

Ive been told that we will need to bypass or disable the VATS (theft deterrent). Do I have to get the ECU memcal re-chipped, or is there some cheap and easy way of bypassing the VATS? We dont particular want to spend $250+ on re-chipping a standard motor!

Has anyone else done this kind of conversion on their Torana?

Also, the car no longer has an electronic auto transmission. What do I have to do about this?

Any advice will help, as late-model electrics are not my specialty. Cheers!

Hi LHoon.

This is a common request.

It would be easier to use the ECU,harness & memcal out of a standard VN/VP 5 litre. These do not have VATS.

The ECU you have I assume is off an auto VS V8. Problem is the auto & manual VS V8s use 2 different ECUs & it's not practical to try & get the auto one to work with the TH350. You could try for a manual VS V8 ECU, but you still have the VATS problem.

Spend the $250 and get the memcal done and get some extra HP out of it.
Heck it cost me $1500 to get the ECU done in my LS1.

Thanks guys.

Dr Terry, if you go ahead and use the VN/VP ECU, harness and memcal... wouldn't the VS have different sensors to the VN/VP? Also, surely using the later model (and in theory, more advanced) VS ECU would be advantageous with regard to power, fuel ecconomy, smoothness etc... wouldn't it? By changing the ECU they (GMH) must have been trying to improve something!

LS1LX - sheeesh! I can think of better ways of spending $1500. You can buy a complete (quality) aftermarket engine management system for that!

Hi LHoon.

No, the VR/VS ECU is not really more advanced than the VN/VP one & all of the engine sensors are the same.

The 3 reasons for the use of the later ECUS ARE:

1. Ability to run the electronic (4L60E) auto trans. The manual trans ECU is smaller & is the same in appearance as the VN/VP ECU.

2. The VATS or immobiliser which was forced on them by insurance companies etc.

3. Faster data from the diagnostic plug for more rapid active data reading.

The later ECU doesn't do anything better (for the engine) than the earlier one.

OK Thanks Dr Terry. That clears things up quite a bit!
I will investigate getting a new VN/VP loom and ECU.

Dr Terry, you said the VS ECU is basically the same as the VN/VP one... I don't suppose you can somehow use a VN/VP Manual memcal in the VS ECU? Would that solve all of my problems?

Hi again LHoon.

The ECU is cheap (I sell them for $150 with 2 years warranty) & the loom you have will be very similar to VN/VP one, any sparky could make it work.

The 2 issues you have will be that you will need a VN/VP V8 mem-cal & you will need an electronic speedo sensor in the speedo cable for the speedo signal to the ECU.

It is a $20 part that clips into the harness at the ignition to bypass this.

PM/Email V6hatch as the same need to be done to the V6 conversions and he will beable to let you know what the part is, and where to get it.

You can also get an OEM electronic converter for the TH350, but don't ask me where from.

Grant..

Hi again.

The VN/VP mem-cal will not work in the VS V8 auto ECU & the ECU will put out heaps of error codes because it will be looking for an electronic auto trans that isn't there.

If you are in Sydney I know someone who can turn off the vats, change the settings for the thermo fans & fix the shift changes if you swap diff gears for around $100.

Or you could just buy a plug-in loom and ECU from Castle Auto Electrics.
Plugs straight into the standard crummydoor loom without any mods.
