Press Release October 28th 2008

The Mount Gambier A & H Society Inc, today announced it has secured a major extension for an already popular automotive event, Mount Gambier Autofest & Show N Shine, to be held annually during the last weekend of October, kicking off for the first time in 2009.

Autofest Group together with the support of the South East Street Machines, Mount Gambier A & H Society and the City of Mount Gambier have agreed to continue the longest running Street Machine event, now into its 31st year well into the future.

The organisers of the highly successful Shepparton Springnats Autofest and both the Murray Bridge SA and Corowa NSW Autofest events will establish the new Mount Gambier Autofest and Show N Shine event which will attract estimated crowds of between 15,000 20,000 spectators.

Mount Gambier Showgrounds have been chosen by organisers as the most suitable venue after consideration of sites across the City.

The alcohol free Springnats Autofest has been running in Shepparton for 16 years, while the Murray Bridge Autofest is in its third successful year. The Corowa event also adds an exciting new element to the series of events, which will include Drag Racing, and is sure to bring enthusiasts from across the country.

Mount Gambier Mayor Steve Perryman, recognises the prospects of the Mount Gambier Autofest & Show N Shine and believes it has the potential to be one of the biggest annual events on the Citys already action packed Calendar.

This is great news for businesses in the City and we really want to see the community support and maximise the benefits of the event, Mayor Perryman added.

Studies have established that both Murray Bridge and Sheppartons events provide a multi million dollar economic injection into the community and a conservative estimate of the Corowa Autofest is in excess of $3 million.

The Springnats and Autofest events are all about admiring the best cars in the country with family and friends in an alcohol free environment. Spectators to the event will witness some of the most powerful cars compete side by side in events such as:

 Go-To-Whoa  fast paced action where timed vehicles compete over 140 metres and must stop on a designated point;
 Motokana  fast paced obstacle course action, set against the clock;
 Show N Shine  competitors show their restoration expertise and the beauty of their cars;
 Dyno Challenge  see cars go through their gears in a stationary position on the dyno machine;

Organiser Mr Les Adams said that he is pleased with what the Mount Gambier location has to offer and that the local stakeholders have been great to work with.

We are grateful for the support which has made it possible, they really made us analyse every aspect of the event and applied very strict criteria.

We foresee our relationship with the South East Street Machines, Mount Gambier A & H Society and the Mount Gambier Council will be a long-term partnership, he said.

We have a long successful history with our events in other locations and the fact that there is strictly no alcohol is a major factor in that. Everywhere there is an Autofest they are happy to have us and were very pleased to be coming to Mount Gambier, Mr Adams said.

Mr Adams continued Autofest is a car festival especially for modified cars, but restored and original cars are also welcome and catered for. A highlight of the event would be the fiercely competitive Burnout Title.

We usually get anywhere between 50 to 100 entrants for that event alone, he said.

The Mount Gambier Autofest & Show N Shine will be promoted nationwide in Australasian car magazines, Trading Post as well as extensive television and radio campaigns.

End.

Autofest will now be involved with organizing Australias longest running Street Machine motoring event the Mount Gambier Show N Shine.
From 2009 this event will be rebranded the Mount Gambier Autofest and Show N shine and will partner our Springnats event as well as the new events that are the Murray Bridge and Corowa Autofests. The Mount Gambier Show N Shine has just celebrated their 30th anniversary and was seriously looking at ceasing this landmark show and after hearing of this we immediately contacted the organizers, talks were held with the South East street Machines, Mount Gambier City Council as well as the A&H Show Society and a partnership was formed to continue the event with Autofest steering it back to one of South Australias premier events.
Between us we could see the benefits of combining resources and by adding the Autofest trademark driving events to the static display Show N Shine it is anticipated that the Mount Gambier event will have more appeal than ever to both Competitors and Visitors.
The Show N Shine will be still an indoor show but an added outdoor show area will also be in place. The indoor space is limited and a first in best dressed policy applies.
Added attractions will include, Go To Whoa, Motokana, Corkscrew and of coarse the mighty Burnout Comp.
All information and entry forms can be obtained from [email protected] or by phone 0417 511557

I'm way behind the 8ball here, I've only just noticed this thread, but has SESM gone defunked?

We were members for a while, regulars at the show with two cars, but missed two shows in a row, moved house and could no longer find a working number for any of the old members although I remember asking if anyone had a contact for the club on here, apparently no one did.

Can I ask why it's $100 to put a car on display only or are there other bits included? Bugger - was my fav show too! I'm sure gonna miss those dinners - crazy shit!

Ah well, the times they are a changin' eh.

ETA: If there's any SESM members with a copy of the 2001 video I'm after a copy, guy I loaned it to lost it & it has my daughter on it, aged 4 please PM me.

rightyo, ta. Think I'll pass, IMHO once the price gets that high it kinda puts the average family (with a daily driver they show) out of the field, best left to those with 'a house on wheels/elite street' types.

Back to the original question though - what happened to SESM?

Valvoline Autofest a resounding success
Posted on November 4, 2009, 7:07am

Judging by crowd response, the inaugural Valvoline Mount Gambier Autofest was a resounding success and future editions look almost assured.
Held at the Mount Gambier Showgrounds over both days of last weekend, an estimated 4800 people got their fix of all things motorsport.
Incorporating the old Show N Shine event, Autofest also included a variety of driving events as well as simulated displays to keep spectators entertained.
More than 150 entries were received across the board of all associated events and Autofest is the first of a national tour that will also include similar shows at Shepparton, Murray Bridge and Corowa.
The Show N Shine section, held in the showgrounds main pavilion attracted plenty of interest with cars in different categories.
One of the most eye catching was a 1933 Chrysler Coupe, dubbed Jekyll and Hyde.
Owned by Anthony Whitehead of Adelaide, the vehicle has been repainted blue and white and features a dramatic skull.
Jekyll and Hyde was judged the best hot rod on show.
Driving events also proved to be extremely popular with both crowd and drivers (and eager passengers, only too willing to hop into selected cars).
Angus Sweet, driving a Nissan 200SX won the corkscrew challenge, where drivers were required to negotiate a number of witches hats, evenly spaced over a 140 metre course.
Melissa Justin in a Toyota Aristo won the female equivalent of that event.
Victor Sakaris in a HK Monar won the V8 Dyno Challenge, where cars were put their horsepower range whilst in a stationary position.
The Go-to-Whoa was a new event where drivers were asked to sprint a certain distance but brake on a dedicated spot. The male winner was Darren Wagner in a Holden HZ, while Karen Keeves in a Holden Monaro won the girls race.
Steven Johnson was judged the overall winner of Autofest, edging out Rod Cambert and Lincoln Tucker.
