Amalgamation of pics from thread above I put together to help me understand/see what was going on .....

What my relay looks like now .... is it correct?

Could be the microswitch on the dipper switch.

But if you have no lights then you may have a problem at the headlight switch.

If you have a test light you can check for power on the blue wire.

It should have power when the headlight switch is on.

From memory the pink wire should have power to it all the time.

A simple test might be to remove the white wire from the relay and connect a flying lead.

Each time you ground the white wire the relay should click and change state. IE from high to low etc.

But my bet so far is that you have no power on the blue.

You could also check by shorting the pink with the green and then the brown to make sure your headlights are okay.

If you dont have a multimeter then I would strongly suggest you buy one.

Jaycar and Supercheap have inexpensive ones, and it makes fault finding, especially over the internet a whole lot easier.

Cheers

Rob

Got a mate around with a multimeter (didn't buy one as I have no idea how to use one) and after about 3/4 hr we tried to work out why no power coming out of the pink wire. Tried eveyrthing, fuses, traced the wire back under the dash,.well tried to, couldnt find a pink wire anywhere, and eventually mate says oh let's just test the wire a bit back from where it pushes on to the relay and walah, power.

Gave the male/female bits a clean with some WD40 and yay high/low beam now wokring .... for good measure gave each of the five points a squirt of WD40 .

So after all that all, it was, was a dirty connection.

Dirty connections are a problem with older cars.

The fuse panels are renowned for it as well.

And that was a long time ago, so they are likely worse.

The best thing I found for cleaning connections, like the spade males and fuse holders, was the grey part of the old pencil/ink erasers.

Just enough grit to get the job done easily.

A bit of a squeeze on the female spade sections usually sorts them out, but you need to get them out of the plastic bit first in most instances.

For 20 bucks for a cheap multimeter, you should grab one and try it out.

An even better one from Jaycar has an AC/DC clamp ammeter for around 90 bucks which comes in very handy.

If you are going to touch electrics, and have little knowledge, having a meter makes remote diagnostics a lot easier.

The person helping can tell you how to measure and where to measure.

Cheers

Hi Rob ... it was your fault finding about three posts up that we followed and it helped us heaps, well helped my mate a fair bit, I just turned the light switch on and off and flipped the dimmer handle a dozen or more times :)

If we didn't have that, we'd prob still be there 24 hours later pokig & probing to no avail

Jumping onto an old thread as it still seems relevant!

My headlights are working but I don't have any high beam. I initially thought it was the micro switch at the steering column, but I checked all that for continuity and earth, which was all good down to the loom plug. I cannot hear any relay click when I pull back on the indicator stalk, or when I push forward with the headlights on.

I will test for voltage tomorrow, but I was wondering out of curiosity is there an equivalent relay to the Bosch unit? I understand the workings of the 5 pin Bosch, although not sure of the amperage for the two circuits and if there is an available off the shelf equivalent, for those of us not concerned about originality (sorry for the purists that probably want to strangle me now!)?

Before you go and replace the relay, do a few simple checks first.

Get yourself a test light & see if you have 12V at the pink wire (with ignition ON) & 12V at the blue wire (with headlights ON).

Earth out the white wire & see if the relay clicks. If it does, the hi-beam should come on.

If it doesn't you need a new relay & sadly you must must use the Bosch unit (or an equivalent).

Thanks for that, yes, testing all the wiring at the relay was my plan for this morning although I already know from yesterday that there is no relay click, so if the white wire isnt somehow broken then my guess is the relay. I noticed the caps are just pinched on. Can the relays be opened to check if contacts are rusty or welded?

Here is a new one. Also has a schematic of the relay internals which I've attached below.

Well, I checked the wiring (which have different colours and terminals to the original) and tested for continuity of the white wire and voltage as suggested which all appeared good. With no answers, I decided to open the relay to check the contacts and winding. Whilst there was nothing obviously wrong, I made sure the contact points were not stuck together. I then accidentally dropped it when preparing to put it back together (doh!). Strangely, I plugged it all in and it works! Sometimes it just takes a knock to remind it who's boss LOL!
