Can anybody highlight using an LH wiring diagram
1) a parallel circuit
2) a series circuit
3) what is involved (ie alternator dimmer etc)
Thanks guys any help would be great,

oh and are there both ac and dc currents in car electrics?

Sorry dont have a LH circuit diag to highlight for you.

But on the one you have? circle the headlights, they are in parallel
Circle the dimmer switch and dash lamps, they are in series.Or any dash gauge or warning lamp is in series with its relevant sensor.
Whats involved dimmer, alternator etc, dimmer is easy, its a rheostat/variable resistor/potentiometer. A coil of resistance wire where a moveable contact can either short circuit all of it or go through any length of it to control the voltage across another component.
Alternator - too complicated-do a search for some diagrams on the net.
Alternator produces alternating current which is rectified to DC, all other power is DC in the car.
Hope I get an A+.

Alternators produce 3 phase AC that is then converted to single phase and then converted to DC with a bridge rectifier.

Id give ya an A+ devil.

not many people know that alternators produce a 3 phase voltage, have a look at the diagram in your torana manual if no one beleives me.

Yes, you can use that diagram. It says LH/X,but as far as I can tell its really only an LH diagram only.
Couldnt get it to display any larger, but if you look carefully at the light switch you can see the rheostat of the dimmer switch.
Also the headlamp dipper switch appears to wrongly labelled as 'dimmer'
