Well I finally cracked my second goal with this rebuilt black motor and that was a 13.5

http://www.youtube.c...36132bd88739802

This was built to a budget and I set myself 2 goals of 100mph+ and 13.5, the engine is not much really, basically a Yella Terra 12-port head with a Kelford cam and webers on a black motor, I have used as many stock items as possible, the biggest outlay were the webers but it was either this or a new computer for the injection and I like the sound of the webers better.

Diff = NON LSD 3.55:1 (A mate threw it together out of bits lying around my garage)
Gearbox = M20 stock (Could do with a Toybox mated with my Hilux diff)
Clutch = with minor mods Stock
Ignition system = Stock electronic
Tyres Bridgestone 205x60x14 Potenza
Stock fuel pump (with after pressure regulator)+
It is street driven at least once a week.

The latest two changes were my distributor which had the advance altered and the cast Yella Terra head was cleaned up as it has had heaps of use, I bought it 5 years ago second hand from a guy who bought it second hand 3 years before that.

Believe me though it is not easy to get off the line without major wheelspin and I have to be very gentle on my launching as my first run proved with a 15.1

OK, now any input as to extra HP I will consider the cost vs practical.

Cheers
Graham

Nice job, the car sounds great. That's an excellent time with a single spinner diff.

What was the 60 foot time like?

Thx everyone.
The biggest thanks goes to my friend Dave who I took the bare engine parts and he assembled it and dialed the cam in and adjusted the webers etc. He always said it would take some doing

Over the years I have heard lots of advise and opinions and I am now over the moon with my decisions and actually suprised as I reckon there is still .3-.5 of a second in the webers, gearbox and diff yet.

60ft is usually 2.1-2.2 on the quicker times, I also ran 2 13.7s and if i get excessive wheelspin its about 2.6 or more.

Sorry never had a 1/8 for the day as they had issues at the track.

That is just awesome. Sounds like an effective recipe. But I can't believe you haven't even welded the diff up haha

LOL... I have a 3.9 welded up in the shed I have been saving until I have my hilux ready to go in as I reckon I will break something if i do.

I am still amazed the M20 is still holding out as I have given it heaps.

I am going to add another coil to it next time and run 2 coils to help in the higher revs, this is a simple but effective way of getting more spark at the higher revs using standard bosch ignition.

Well done, Nothing like the sound of a screaming six.
Have you played around with engine timing & tyre pressures

Thanks, it actually sounds like I am missing on one pot but dam it goes hard.

I used to try lowering the pressure but actually now run 26psi on the rear and 40psi in the front
I added a bit of initial advance as I was struggling with traction and that way I lose a bit of high end revs but was able to lower my take off revs to 1500-2000 and use the torque to eliminate tyre spin. Overall timing is about 32 with intial about 14, BTW the cam was changed from the recommended by around 10 degrees which gives me huge increase of power above 4000rpm

I have 2 techniques for taking off:
Let the clutch out until it just takes and for less than half a second hold it while it grips
And the second is rev it up and down from around 2000rpm to about 4000rpm and while its slowing down and just before I hit the power again let out the clutch, the tyres seem to grip ok like this.

3 of the internals that have helped this engine.

The Flywheel (Modded with a computerised machine)
Posted Image

The Cam (New and designed for this engine)

Nothing outrageous with the cam and some would say even mild as its just barely more than an XU-1
Posted Image

The Crank before (My own mods then it was balanced)
The rough edges and back shows alot of bits to caused friction
Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

First CUT
This is to speed up the grinding.
Posted Image

The Crank after
Removed alot of daggs and rough edges and the big knobs at each end then shaped the crank to have a nice leading edge and a rounded edge on the rear.
Posted Image

Just a bit more to polish it from here.

that flywheel is that a cast iron one how hard are you turning this engine? are those stock rod bolts aswell?

Like I said it is on a budget... :D

Standard bolts yes.
Standard cast flywheel lightened yes.
Standard small clutch

This is my Mark1 engine and I may actually build a more modified one later as I wanted to see what I could do on pump gas first
I change around 6200-6300rpm as the cam was disigned for 12:1 and I am only approx 10:1. and its not really getting much more revs.

I am going to pull it apart after the next meeting and refresh and check everything in particular the shape of the big end caps as I have ovaled them in the past running too much advance.

Thanks, its sort of funny though as its really running rough and the webers need tuning or something which starts me thinking it can go faster...
I don't even know what sort of horsepower I make as the last time I was on a dyno I was running mid 14s with 158rwhp.

Can anyone estimate my hp?
I was hoping for around 200rwhp with this engine.

Based on a wet vehicle weight of 1200kgs (inc driver) it calculates as 213 RWHP or 266 FWHP.

Horsepower Calculator

They are some strong figures from your engine spec.

Your measured RWHP of 158 calculates as a 14.9 second 1/4 mile time @ 91 MPH.

Thanks Craig.
I put the actual weight of myself and the car (car with fuel is 1040kg + me 95kg) 2502lbs

201RWHP and 251FWhp
Now I want to raise that by 20FWHP and figure this is about the max a stock bottom end can handle reliably with my driving style.

And my old Dyno figure when it was injected is backed up.
14.5 @ 93mph = 159RWHP (I was a consistant 14.5 DYO)

So not startling figures but shows what a balanced few mods can really do which only echoes why Harry Firth originally went with the LC and LJ over the Monaro :D

Great result mate.. just curious about that twin coil setup you mentioned? how would you rig that up??

#24 _NZ Toranaman_

Twin coil is dead easy eh..

You leave your standard set up and then add and extra coil and only add one wire from + to + and one wire from - to -
thats it.

Add some sealant if you need to so that a spark is not generated from the second one.

This helps speed up the recovery time and allows full power sooner.

The coil fires 3 times every revolution of the crank and at 6000 rpm the crank is turning 100 times per second so it speaks for its self.
