I'm in the process of pulling my suspension down (front and rear) for rebuilding while the body is away being tarted up!

Has anyone had experience with bush removal tools like this one -

and has anyone seen places selling something like this locally? I'll check with some local tool places through the week, but thought someone here might know.

Originally I'd intended to just take all the bits to the suspension place to get the new bushes fitted since I don't have a press. Unfortunately it'll be a PITA for me to transport the entire diff housing to get the rear upper trailing arm bushes done so I figure if I can get my hands on a tool like this it might be far simpler to do it all myself..... this particular kit sells for $75-$80 USD so it's not expensive... in fact while researching I have heard of Pedders charging $15 per bush or something to replace them, so the tool would just about pay for itself too.

Front bushes are heaps easier in a press (just have to find suitable pieces to support everything). Doesn't work with the bushes in the diff of course though! That kit is only really any good value for money if the bits and pieces are a perfect fit - just as easy with a length of threaded rod, a couple of nuts, and suitable diameter thick washers with a short length of pipe. You probably have enough bits and pieces lying around to do the diff bushes without spending any money.

For anyone who has been searching for a cheap way to make a tool to assist with removing front suspension bushes, I found a 40NB gate saddle is a very good fit and only costs $20.  A quick hit with the file to give it 44.0mm across the face and it slotted into the suspension arm to give support while you're pushing out the bush.  If you don't provide support while pushing out the bush, you will risk cracking the suspension arm.

I've used the threaded rod, cut down lengths of pipe and washer method. Works fine on the bench with trailing and control arms. But it was a real bastard on the diff. Not much room under there and the damn things must have been in there for forty years. Bent a few washers, you have to make sure the "pushing" piece matches up with the old bush perfectly. Otherwise is catches and goes crooked. When mine finally moved there was an almighty "CRACK!"... closely followed by some celebratory curse words.

Just want to correct a measurement on my post - it should be roughly 40mm wide across the bush (make sure you don't accidentally hit the zero button on your cheap Aldi vernier caliper when taking photos!!)

Presses are as little as $250 roughly from machinery house, you'll save that on 1 or 2 car's, and probably use the all thread, threaded rod or booker bar, whatever your shop wants to call it for the other bushes as stated & you should be all good. Gary.
