Can someone please confirm the engine prefixes used by police.

In Victoria, I belive it is 'VP' (for Victoria Police)

Could it be 'NS' for NSW.

thanks

Most of the cars & engines that I've seen are stamped NP,apparently you can work out when they were stamped by the numbers.

I know chassis tags are stamped with VP when its a recovered stolen car where the tags have been removed, also i believe rebirthed cars have these (not %100 on that)

VP=Vic Pol

I don't know about engines, sorry

I think they stamp the engines in NSW with N for NSW followed by the year the number is issued, say 97 for 1997, then a four or five digit serial number & ending with P for Police. I had a 5L engine like that but they did a poor job stamping the number, all uneven & half the digits barely visible.

Cant help on the NSW thing but some info for reference,
I asked about a QP_ _ _ _ _ red 6 engine number & general
concesus was that it was Queensland Police.

I had the Chev decked in the HQ & forgot about the engine
number so had to have another issued, seen to be a little
different in WA as they gave me W_ _ _ _ _ _P.

Saw an engine that should have been VC5XXXXX which was NSC5xxxxx. Am assuming the NS was New South Wales police and still think I might be right. Car was originally sold by Pernell / Purnell Motors, is this NSW?

All clear now. N5C (6 numbers after) is the code on the engine. which according to the list linked above applies to a GMPA replacement engine - 304 ci. That now makes perfect sense given the car the engine is in. Thanks Everyone. Thanks rodomo. when are you coming racing again ???????????????????????? (So I can kick your arse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) R.

It's not going to happen before spring.
"Kick my arse" won't happen either unless you're racing a different car?

N is the first letter of the Holden replacement engine prefix for red motors (early 1970's onwards). So if you have a Nasco replacement engine you will have no problems with rego.

What is the full prefix of your engine number and how many numbers are there following the prefix?

I have a question about the 186 block that csame in my FB Ute. It has been restamped, rather crudely I might add by Victoria Police. Number is V680077P which k understand go be the 77th restamp of 1968 by Victoria Police.

My question related to another number I found stamped on the front above the timing cover AM1185. Pictures tell the story. Anyone seen this?cea6f07c10197f497ef267b4d139b77f.jpg962255ccc36c0c6994a07a259347d6d8.jpg

The head is from a 179 and gearbox from 138 so no clues there I'm afraid.

Are the AM1185 letters the same size as normal engine stamps?

What is the block date code? The Police didn’t stamp them, they issued the number which was done by the inspection station. That is how it worked in NSW anyway. They are always rough.

I’d say it was a replacement block and piston set or short engine from GMH. I don’t think they had engine numbers in 1967. My guess is the AM1158 is some sort of identifier from the engine plant As it used the engine number stamps. It looks like it has never been painted, which might suggest it was aftermarket fitted rather than dealer fitted. The sump looks original paint.

Sump is EH to fit in the FB. 179 head and I thought the carb was 149 so a real bitsa. I'm sure the timing cover is unpainted which would suggest a short motor maybe.

That AM1185 stamped on the front is not the font used by GMH. May be coincidence but 1185 could be November 1985? The AM may be the engine reconditioner's business name initials?
