The scary part is that they just keep getting better. These ones might be easy to pick as fakes to people who have studied them, but the average Joe wouldn't know.  I don't think I could be confident identifying a set of tags as original just by seeing photos of it any more. I would need to see them in person, and I would want my glasses too.

As much as I would hate myself for doing it, I might buy a good set from each model so I can do just that.

That’s why I have hundreds of tag sets across all assembly plants and Series, plus thousands of photos of tags. Makes it easy to spot fakes when required.

As skeptical as I am, we are at a stage where we need a method to 100% authenticate genuine cars. Yes there are lots of 'what if's' but nothing in life is certain (except death). Some members have already commenced such a source of information which, to the credit to the one (1) I know is guarded. And yes there are lots of genuine cars with mismatched parts/engines/missing tags not sure how to categorize these. And yes there are still cars coming out of the woodwork from old timers who are dying off but these are few and far between these days as the mighty $ talks. If we had a National accreditation scheme offering owners (for a fee) to get their car authenticated by those members who specialize in certain models, and perhaps a certificate issued (they'll probably fake these as well)   Then at least the intimate knowledge which qualified members are reluctant to divulge could still remain discreet. Fraud is a massive problem not just isolated to classic cars. Wouldn't it be nice to come up with something that works to deter the fraudsters in our industry.

I bought a blank LH Torana body tag from ebay. It won't fool all of the people all of the time, but it will fool some if the details are stamped correctly onto it.

Anyway, the seller, "syd_man_v8" sent it over and it has a return name and address on the back.  Who do I report it to? The seller is in Hinchinbrook NSW, so I guess there is no point getting onto the Victorian contact in the Cloned Muscle Cars thread.

The VIN tag (and most likely the BODY tag) come from an internal GMH car too. It is marked in pen on the tractor-feed printout before it was microfilmed in the later 1970's so it may have been of some significance or flagged for whatever purpose.
