 SL/R 5000 with L34 should be 8D69Z#######H not 8D69T

The engine number stamping will be just as bad for sure lol

Hi

From May 1970 - so predates the introduction of the XU-1 option.

Cheers

Funny looking "Chamios" trim as well, also I thought I read somewhere on these forums that LJ XU1s only had black 40X? trim.

Tags look to be in "perfect" condition as well. Very unsettling to see this dodgy business going on.

Cheers,

Liz :)

The trim colour is Antique Saddle. You could have any interior colour you wanted in an XU1 (up until March 1973) as long as it was black. From March 1973 all the current production GTR trim colours were also available with RPO XU1.

This is the same LGM GTR (XU1???) that was for sale from Amberley Qld in December 2015.

Is there any law against selling this or is it a legal re-shell before the laws came in?

Off-loading it after only two years says something, assuming it is the same car.

I'm wondering what a re-shell is? Probably a stupid question and maybe not for this thread but seeing as it's been mentioned.

Cheers,

Liz :)

I'm wondering what a re-shell is?

A.k.a. a re-body.

Previously when cars crashed on race tracks and couldn't be easily fixed you could buy a spare body or 'shell' minus tags from the factory and swap over everything including the tags.

It was also done privately for the same reasons when a car was a write off, you legally bought another car and swapped everything over and it was known as re-birthing.

Of course criminals took advantage and would steal high end cars and swap the tags from legal cars that were written off, known in the business as a 'number job', swapping the numbers over. You will also find a similar practice where a person will sell the tags from their old SL/R, etc. on ebay then someone will either steal another SL/R and swap numbers or turn their Torana S into an SL/R.

Thanks Stephen, always thought the tags being sold on ebay etc were dodgy. Never realised that it was once a legitimate thing to do. I'm sure I saw a re-bodied Falcon advertised for sale recently and couldn't understand why anyone would entertain the idea of buying such a thing. Thanks for the lesson :)

Cheers,

Liz :)

Any car could be legitimately repaired using a new current production body shell. Holden and most other manufacturers had replacement body shells available and still do for their current production models.

In the past, most, if not all insurance companies were paying crash repair shops to repair badly damaged cars using the cut and shut method and/or possibly another old shell from a wrecking yard.

What is illegal these days is to perform cut and shuts and/or take an existing car, wipe it's identity and replace it with the identity from another vehicle.
