I recently purchased an LH 308 and am trying to finish it off for licensing.

The problem I have is that the speedo is no longer working.

I unhooked the speedo cable from the gearbox and spun the cable and the
speedo is working fine.

I put my finger in the gearbox and I can't feel the cog that works the cable.

I have the plastic speedo cog still but I think the metal cog in the box has moved
inside the box.

Has anyone heard of this before.

Sometimes the little clip that holds the worm drive on the gearbox output shaft breaks (usually with outside assistance) or is not correctly installed. You'll need to remove the extension housing to have a gander

When you refit the extension housing, make sure the 'slot' in the drive cog lines up with the retaining clip.

Dont ask me how i know! lol

the metal cog in the box has moved

The drive gear inside the box should be plastic as well.

Take care to engage the reverse gear selecter as it goes back together.

Also does the thrust washer belong on the reverse gear idler shaft, Bronze side against gear as this fell out when removing extension housing.

Any help on the above would be great

Thanks

Somewhere I have a text explaining a easy way of puting the rear extension on but I cannot find it at the moment, If I find it I will post it here.
But I have a few pictures here that may be of use to you.

Here is the text

The couple of things that make what you need to do on the 4spd a bit easier are.
When you go to take the rear housing off loosen the bolt that holds the reverse light switch and detent ball and spring.
Loosen the bolt enough to move the switch away from the reverse gear leaver but not right out.
Then loosen the reverse gear lock nut but not off leave it on a few threads at least, then tap the center pin down with a hammer.
The reason for doing this is that it lowers the reverse gear pivot in side the gearbox.
Now remove all the bolts that hold the rear housing on and pull it backwards off the main housing.
You may have to give it a tap to dislodge it from the locating dowels.
Now if you pull it back and down it may pull the reverse gear back on the main shaft a bit which is good,
as it will give you a bit more room to disengage the reverse gear from the pivot arm.
Then rear housing should come off (you may have to twist it a little bit to one side still to disengage it)
If you put a little bit of grease on the new gasket when you go to put it back on it will hold it in place on the main housing.
Now the other pictures are to do with the thrust washers on the reverse idler gear.
These tend to move or fall off the reverse idle shaft when you disassemble the rear housing.
If you have a look at the pictures it shows what you need to do with them before reassembly if you do not locate them corectly
they will bind up the reverse gear idler and make it hard to turn the box from the input shaft when not in gear
and will end up with them spinning in the box and damaging the housing.
To refit the rear housing on to the case it is a mater of locating the reverse gear pivot in to reverse gear then pushing the
housing forward and then locate the reverse gear idler in to the thrust washer then the back housing of the box.
Then locate on the dowels, fit a couple of bolts in to the housing and lightly tighten up.
If it gets harder to turn the input shaft when you have tightened it up it may of moved on the thrust washers.
Now tighten up the reverse gear pivot nut and try the operation of the reverse gear mechanism to make sure it is all working ok.
Finish reassembling and the job is done.
The pictures I mention above show some of the things I am talking about..
Cheers Paul.

Glad to be able to help out guys.
The speedo clip is the same for all the aussie boxs so 3 or 4 spd types.
So really any gearbox overhaul type places or a old holden wreckers should have one for you.
Just a couple of other things I was thinking as well is why the drive came off in the first place.
A common cause is incorect installation of the speedo cable.
This picture shows the correct way.
http://gallery.oldho...tion 2.jpg.html
One other is incorect drive gear to driven gear.
I have speedo gear information here.
http://gallery.oldho...s/Speedo gears/
But this may be what you need to check out.

Cheers Paul.

That explains it then. Incorrect instalation it was in all the way with the locking tab on the outside of the cable, That program is great. I have a white gear ofn the drive and a green one at the end of the cable, works out spot on.

Thanks heaps once again as i would have pushed it all the way in.

Cheers

Ok managed to resecure my drive gear but was able to do it without taking off the extension housing. Will give instructions for anyone that has the same issue with a broken drive gear clip + an intact drive gear and is up for trying a shortcut.

My drive gear clip had come off at some point so the drive gear had slipped further down the output shaft. I tied a piece of thread around the new clip, and tried to put it through the speedo cable hole and then into the hole on the output shaft where it belongs. It took about 10 attempts but I managed to get it where it needed to go. This is where the thread came in handy to pull the clip back up out of the speedo cable hole on all the failed attempts. When the clip was in place I left it there and then found a piece of plastic pipe that was bigger than the output shaft but smaller than the extension housing rear seal (see pics). I was then able to put my finger through the speedo hole and press the clip down, while pushing the drive gear up the output shaft with the piece of plastic pipe. After a bit of twisting to make sure the drive gear was lined up with the clip I kept pushing and felt the click of the clip securing into place.

So for those of you that have the gearbox in the car, and have a broken clip but the drive gear still looks to be in good order, this could be worth a shot if you feel like saving a whole bunch of time.

So is the broken clip still floating around in there?

I fished mine out with one of those endoscope cameras with a hook on the end, you can pick one up for $60 online. It had been at the bottom of the housing for a long time before that and no harm done in the meantime - that I'm aware of anyway
