Hey all,

As the topic states, Im having a prick of a time trying to make a dipstick fit my engine between the extractors due to the positioning of the pipe outlets on the VN Heads opposed to the Early pre EFI Heads.

I cannot get a stick to work, So far ive ruined 2 HQ/TORANA Style dipsticks trying to make it work and its starting to become rather expensive.

im asking anyone out there who has VN Heads on their torana, How did you rectify this problem Would a VN 5L Stick work I dont know,

Please help

cheers

I know your pain & i've been down this road twice. The HQ/Torana ones are the ones i used but they do take a fair bit of bending to fit. On my SLR i bolted the extractor up to the engine & did it while the engine was on a stand, which made it relatively easy, my SL i did with the engine in the car & it was a pain in the A. I wish there was an easy way to explain how i did it but i can take some pics of my cars if it'll help. What extractors are you using, as i had to do more modifying to get the dipstick tube to clear the extractors, sparkplug leads etc in my SLR which uses Pacemakers than i had to in my SL which uses Castle Headers.

Cheers Matt

Thanks matt, Im also using the Castle Headers on mine, And the engines already been fit to the car :(

you'd think by now someone would be selling a HQ-EFI Heads dipstick..

Id love to be able to buy a flexible dipstick But seems only to be available for CHEV.

Looks like ill be off to by another stick.

Mine has a hq tube & dipstick & vs hsv headers.
Took a few hours of bending & crushing the tube to get it all to fit so that the headers would bolt down properly. Also ended up grinding some of the metal tab on the tube so it would be easier to get that to bolt down also.Looks factory.

Lee, Thanks for the pics mate your a champ!

I See you've done away with the Mounting tab on the stick, Ive been trying to mod mine in a way that it will bolt up, Perhaps ill try without bolting it up, they are a pretty tight fit.

Im goin to by another stick monday, ill let you all know how it turned out,

Cheers
Marc

I just used a factory HQ-WB/LH/LX dipstick with VR cast maifolds. Just had to bend the tab a bit to make it fit. Did it on the engine stand too though.
This is the best picture I have of it though.

These are the best pics i could take, & i tried several different angles. This started as a Redline HQ/Torana dipstick & tube & took a bit of shaping to fit, but as you can see, i was able to utilise the mounting tab, which also neaded tweaking. It's a tight squeeze to get it in but the sparkplug & HT lead can be removed/fitted without touching the dipstick. while bending the tube, it looked like it was going to kink a few times, but i used a phillips head screw driver a fraction smaller than the tube itself to give a little more leverage & bent it slowly & carefully bit by bit until it would go in with little fuss. Even then i have to kindof turn it in similar to screwing in a lightbulb or such to get it to pass through the header pipes. it's also a bit stiff to actualy remove/replace the dipstick itself but it works i've had no problems with oil leaks or anything since i fitted it. Hope this helps.

Cheers Matt.

LH SLR: Thanks also for the pics, i managed to make it work 3rd time round, seemed i was going between the wrong pipes, i moved the stick back between 6&8, gave it a few slight bends a gentle tap with a hammer and its snug as.

thanks alot guys :spoton: :spoton: :spoton:

Hey Guys,
I have same issue with the spark plug lead hitting the header pipe.

Can I get some information on where you got those angled lead plugs from ?
Thanks in advance

The light gray ones in that pic are MSD.

I had performance ignition in Nunawading put the appropriate angles on mine. One needed an extra tight angleā€¦.
