I have been told that xu1 fuel caps were black ? by more than one person
one of them being A.M.C editor: this may only refere to LJ XU1s
Can any one CONFIRM this

I was told they differed, depending on state of manufacture: Brisbane-black, elsewhere ????

At the recent Rare Spares night in Melb, I casually walked up to a table with Torana repo's on it and asked "what is this cap that is all black off?" I was immediatley grabbed in a headlock by Knoath and repeatedly smacked in the head by "Les" from rarespares till I understood that these are gen. LJ XU1.

I am still recovering.

Here's the tip from Les's gob. They have a series of scrutineering "screens" that are apparently "gurus" on Toranas. If a new product doesn't pass the "screens" it goes back to the manufacturer and "trimmed" till it passes. Can't ask more than that.

Oh yeah, forgot the bit about the head-butt.

Hi all

The spare parts catalogue is a bit vague it says:

CAP ASSY Exc. XU1 Eng 2805021
CAP ASSY XU1 Eng 2816161
INSERT ALL 2813992

If XU1 caps were plain black, you would think it would say "INSERT ALL Exc. XU1 Eng"

To paraphrase Viv Antoniou's book - "XU1s had the chrome cap with the lion insert up to mid '72 then sported an all black cap GM Part No 2816161".

But if that is true - why is P/N 2816161 (apparently all black) in the Feb '72 parts catalogue?

Hi Guys.

To my knowledge ALL XU1s have the all black cap with no logo.

Have a look at the early pic of the Plum Dinger LC XU-1 on the Lang Lang speed-loop, it has an all black cap.

Problem is, many cars have had their cap changed to the locking type, or had a logo sticker or chrome cap fitted.

Insert...............................2600S 2850S Eng.2813992 Holden Lion

There is no insert listed for XU1

The funny thing is that 4 cyl and the GTR's used the Lion insert.

After 30 years of restoring cars I have learnt one thing. Never trust as correct anything on a restored car or later published histories.

Only original cars and litrature are the best source of info.

Eg "70 Years of Chrysler" refers to a running board light in the valence of a 27 chrysler. In truth it is the grease nipple on the front shackle of the rear spring.

Anyhow for mine, and from what I know of history and the details above; XU1's were assembled with black caps without insert.

Hi all

Well that's good enough for me - I am going for an all black cap. I presume the original ones were not chromed before being painted. I guess I will have to paint a chromed one.

From the ones I have seen, they were not chromed first and painted. Painted diecast only.

The truth is in old pictures and litrature of the day. Not what owners then and espacially now put on their cars. Restored cars are and must always have a question mark over them. I let that comment also apply to me. Although I am particular about originality and happen to be the chief Concourse Judge of the Vintage Drivers Club to boot.

True, dealers put wrong parts on some cars. I saw a VT commodor exec in a show room at Wangaratta with the wrong hub caps. The reason when asked was they had been mixed up with other models.

Bottom line there are always doubtors and that makes for a healthy forum.

However, there is a big difference between Opinion and Fact.

..A.2 Photos shows one that looks like its black over chrome? looks a litte shiney
the second photo shows what looks to be black over the plain casting
i wounder what rare spares look like ?

Dave, Sorry about the first photo, i was using full flash, i took it off for the second photo. They where not chrome but cast then painted. I was lucky to find mine on an old four door about two years ago.

Rare maybe. I picked one up at Bendigo last Nov in a box of junk. I am a little shy to say I paid, um er er should I say ....... well the loose change in my pocket covered the cost. And I still have it. All I have to do is get everything that goes in front of it and it will be worth $30 to $40K's

It is just die cast with a lot of black missing. No sign of there ever being chrome. I sold one to a forum member at the Wagga swap.

Just an observation, but the LJ GTR XU1 featured in the road test (Sports Car World, May 1972 p.20) has a chrome and black fuel cap with the Holden Lion.

Thats what my old 72 XU-1 had and it was a complete unrestored car.
