Hi all
Havnt been around much of late, but found these pics in me camera that
I took when I last worked.
I was servicing a 86 Range Rover & noticed the steering coupling or flex joint
on this heap looked very similar to the 1s in our LCs & Js.

Measured across from bolt to bolt its 50mm, the same as my few old 1s & the 1 new
Metalux 1 I've got, so the Trana shaft coulpings should bolt up OK.
Its a little thicker (34mm) by about 9 to 10mm but the length of the flats machined
into the steering shaft & pinion shaft should allow it to fit, besides those
Nolathane ones are about that thick anyway.
I rang a Landrover/Rangerover place today & they're available at about $75, so probably
gonna be easier to find than a new genuine 1 or a good used original 1.

Cheers Jono

Yeah I had 1 of those too hutch
but just didnt fell right, weather its a harder compound or what, dont know.
Just felt notchy as it flexed thru 90 degrees. Put a good old 1 back on & all was good.
Plus the bright red stands out like dogs balls which is why i hunted down some good old
1s & found a spanking new Metalux 1 also to put away in me spares.

Hi i had a new old stock metalux too,

But when i fitted in the early ninety's,

It didn't last for very long, one corner,

Of the coupling broke of,i suppose it sat,

Around for too long, and the rubber desingerated,

So i had to fit a nolathene coupling it was red,

When i fitted in 1993 it changed colour,

From red to black, after about 8 years later.

I check it out regulary,i don't drive my torana,

Very much, its still the same condition when i fitted,

No cracks or any wearing at all.

Its the only non original part on my car.

Cheers.

Didnt know they change colour frash, mine wasnt on the car
long enough.
Thanx for the warning about the Metalux 1 I've got, I'll keep
an eye on it when & if its all back together.
Bloke I spoke to about the R/Rover one said they were used on them
till they changed to a uni joint type arrangement in the late 80s.
So at least 10 to 15 years younger than the ones on our LC/Js.
After new years I'll see if I can find someone with 1 in stock &
take my Trana shaft couplings to check for fit & see if they're
old stock or still being made.

Hi Sable,

I suppose it changed colour from the heat,

For all of those years,That metalux rubber,

Coulpling was brand new in the box it broke in 3 weeks,

But also keep eye on yours, when you fit it on.

You were saying about the range rover rubber coulpling too.

The metalux rubber coulpings were made in england also too,

And the pictures that you have provied, are very close to,

To the one's are are fitted on our LJ Torana's.

Cheers.

Hey All

Just looking in the LC & LJ parts books. No different part no's listed for 4 and 6 cyl steering flexible couplings. Difference is for RH or LH drive. So looks like 4cyl and 6cyl LC & LJ used same coupling. Even appears the metal flanges, bolts and cotter pins are the same for both. Most likely the HB Viva steering column and coupling would have been used in the HB Torana as the cars were virtually identical and the HB Torana gear would have probably been carried through to the LC model. So if my guess is correct those couplings will be an exact fit for our Toranas.

Cheers
Dave

G/day bsbrians

The following pic is of a NOS LC/LJ coupling. Looks to me like it is identical to the HB Viva part.
As you can see it has the word Patent across the bottom and Metalastik across the top. On the left hand side it has the number 21/940 and on the right hand side it has an X above the number 7. How does that compare to the HB Viva couplings you've bought.

S pack,

they have Patent across the bottom and Metalastik across the top,on the left hand side it has the number 21/940
but on the right hand side where the X is all three i bought have different numbers. 6,13 and 15. my guess is mould numbers?
apart from that they look exactly the same as yours.

Perfect, I reckon that's enough to call it an exact match. I have two others one has a 12 the other has a 15.

I got one from rares and it fit very well. It was so much nicer to drive once I removed that red POS.

Hi

If you are not in any hurry, you can get the original from UK ebay for less than $20 Australian dollars plus postage. Search for Vauxhall flexible steering coupling.

Cheers

Thanks for the tip there Bazza and Mike I just brought one too from the same seller. That's a decent $120 odd saving.

I try to buy local as much as possible but at times like this it's hard to justify such a large margn.

Hi

No probs. We have been getting ripped by people 'in the know' about these for years. These couplings are identical to the original, in fact, they are made by the same original manufacturer "Metalastic". Holden must have imported them direct way back when. I don't know why Rares bothered to make their own when these are still being made. Before Rares made theirs, private importers were charging $185 after buying them in the UK for around $20. They are still asking around $160 for the same thing.

Cheers

Bazza
