I bought a 2nd hand electronic ignition distributor for my 308. It has attahed from the unit a few wires that run into small module (about 80X60mm). Its made of alloy and has heat disapating fins on it.

Can anyone tell me what this is for and where it goes?

I havnt come accross this before.

Does it looked customised.
Someone may have decided to detache the ignition module from the dizzy and put in a seperate case
so it would be affected by engine heat.

Or someone used a Sigma type module to do the same thing.

Picture would be good.

Sounds like an old Bosch electronic conversion for a points dizzy. Does the rotor button have a metal plate attached to it with "castles" all around it pointing downwards? If it is it's an old hall effect setup.

Some 308's use a similar module to the sigma from the factory.
My VB SLE race car used to have one.
Looks similar to this?

That would be my guess too, the box will look very similar to the factory one in rodomo's link but without the extra wires

it looks like the wiring has been hacked up though - how many wire are meant to be connect from the dizzy to the module? there are 2 wires not connected to the plugAttached File  1.jpg   28.86K   48 downloadsAttached File  2.jpg   46.36K   46 downloads

2 floating wires would be + and - coil I would think.
There should be numbers on the module also assuming it is Bosch.
If so, should be able to work it out from there.

The brown one at the dizzy end goes to the coil I believe, the black and red at the module end are earth and +12V (ignition switched), the other two should be connected to the dizzy itself

Its not a Commodore module, just uses the same casing - notice the missing wiring

the brown wire from the dizzy end does it go to the +ve or -ve of the coil?

also - does the tacho wire connect to the +ve coil?

Yep - its an ignition module from a VN-VS V8 commodore. I have one of them fitted to the electronic ignition on my Torana. I have no idea what they are for? I only know what it is because I had to replace it a few years back cause it stopped working and had to try and find one.

Is this the normal setup for putting electronic ignition on a Torana?
How does this setup perform in comparison to others?

As above it's an older Bosch conversion They were available about 15 years or more ago. There is one in my shed here somewhere. You are much better off with a factory WB/VC-VL HEI.

How do they rate performance wise with the WB/VC-VL HEI setup?
My knowledge on electronic ignigion is limited to what I've read on the net.
I am currently having trouble with the dizzy and need to get it reconditioned. Am I better off spending my money on a new ignition setup, or just reco the dizzy I have?
(I have recently rebuit the motor & gearbox in my car so I would like a half decent ignition setup aswell- I had just assumed this setup was ok cause it came on/ran fine on the car when I bought it)

They are normal in other cars from falcons to sigmas as well as II gen commodores.

They perform no different, sometimes better than the dizzy mounted HEI as they are not subject to as much engine heat.

One thing I have just come across is that this dizzy has no vacuum advance. I take it must have came off a later model with EFI.

So do I have to do anything different? Will this work properly without the vaccuum advance? Will my idle be effected?

No advance would prolly be off EFI engine.

no vac advance and also has no mechanical advance, would be pretty hard to function correctly without an ecu or fancy msd gear.

So should not use this and get another?

Looking online there are the cheap ebay ones for 2nd hand holden ones. The holden/bosch ones have the large cap. I need to have the small cap - is the cap and rotor button interchangeable with the one I have?

Probably use the cap and a rotor from a XE falcon, combine this with a blue motor bosch HEI dizzy and you are laughing.

FWIW when purchasing parts always insist on genuine bosch parts.
