Just check the size of the needles, as I fitted a set 18 months ago that were supplied from Midels & marked as 5H with new jets, jets were .090" needles were actually .100". Drilled the jets to .100" & all ok.

G/day Warren

Sounds like an incorrectly coded batch of needles for sure.
Wouldn't it have been better to take the needles back and complain? Unless someone lets them know the needles are incorrect they will keep on selling them.
I would also say that if the needles are not made to the original 5H specs your fuel mixture will probably be incorrect plus add to that the fact you drilled the 90 thou jets out to 100 thou.
Have you had the fuel mixture checked across the whole rev range with an exhaust gas analyzer? If it's all working fine then that's good but if the mixture is too lean or too rich you could be creating yourself some engine problems in the long term.

Cheers
Dave.

Midel will tell you they don't have much CD info , for my second set of needles I went to , Carburettor service company , Burwood , and I found them very good to deal with , with a similar price for needles .

mate i used the brace spacers i told you about and she does not miss a beat, runs smooth as, sounds great, i think the needles i have came from midel, and are thicker than the ones described by S-PACK,,, so i think that the brace spacers where made to sute the needle depth,, it is that or as said the 236 numbered carbys are under the float A101 and are date coded 71, may of been a special batch made for the bathurst car.
i will put up some pics on sunday, to show what im talking about.

once again thanks for the help people
cheers gong

Hi S pak, Midels were informed at the time but was a Saturday morning & I live 3.5 hrs west of midels, so it would have been another week before I could access the car. The fuel mixture ended up close as the cam was different to std.

If your 5H needles from midels don't measure the same as the specs I posted then they are most likely NOT 5H NEEDLES even if they are coded 5H.
Do you have the original 5H needles that came out of the carbs? Compare the new ones to those.
There is a SH coded needle to suit 100 thou jet available for the SU carbs. Check that the code stamped on the needle is not actually SH but may look a bit like 5H. SU needles are typically longer than Stromberg needles.

As for the code stamp on the carby flange ie: 128 or 236.
From what I can figure out these codes are Zenith Stromberg production codes and relate to the type of carby body and it's particular configuration.
The codes on the brass tags appear to be another Zenith Stromberg production code and in part relate to the metering needle and air valve return spring combination for a specific application but have nothing to do with part numbers for those parts.

Cheers
Dave.

How did you go with your new carby needles?
Did you get 6E or 5H and did you have the sort of problem that John is having with his new needles?

Cheers
Dave.
