Using the trusty "when in doubt, consult the forum!" type attitude, I thought it may be worth a shot at posting this.

Problem is: My brothers VS V6 Auto Commodore cranks over but wont start. Only does it when hot (up to normal operating temp). You can crank the bugger for years, but it wont start. If your lucky, there is the occasional fire and it will turn over by itself (but not completely start) for 1 second before dying. Yes its got fuel, yes its got oil, plug leads are on properly, Ive checked all the obvious things. By the way, this car is completely stock.

Leave it too cool down for 35mins or so (about the time it takes for RACQ to arrive), and it starts first time.

Im thinking fuel pump/relay or crank angle sensor maybe??

Would appreciate it if you can point me in the right direction before we get d**ked around my mechanics. :)

Faulty temperature sensors can make engines difficult to start.

This is an LS2 hard start guide.

Sounds like it's your crank angle sensor behind the harmonic balancer. Chuck a bucket of water on it (cools it) and it should start.

Not sure about the temp sencer but def sounds like a typical crank angle sencer.

Yep, I'd go with the crank angle sensor. Not hard to change.

FastEH, where you buying yours at? I paid $35 I think for the last one I bought.

Mello, have you done a fault code check? Drivers side under the steering column, if you poke your head infront of the seat you will see it. Get a paper clip and put 1 end in hole 5 and the other in hole 6. They are the top row from the left. Then put the ignition onto reds and the engine light will blink.

FLASH..........FLASH FLASH gives you the code of 12 which means nothings wrong etc.

You get me?

To clarify- pour water over the FRONT of the engine so it cools the crank angle sensor. Not all over, don't go chucking water on hot exhaust- may crack.

it could be your coil pack or the module underneath the coil pack had it happen before

you checked fuel and oil, did you check spark?

if not try the following.

pull a lead and put a spark plug in it and rest on your manifold (so plug is earthed) and check for spark.

Youll soon see if its electrical.

just pull the two leads off one of the modules and they should ark together to check spark.

personal experience tells me crank angle sensor.

heres another way of doing it mate.

you can also take a lead off the sparkplug and put a screwdriver in it (phillip heads fit nice) and rest it on your block or any earth of your car (make sure the metal of the screwdriver isnt touching anything but the plastic handle is and also the screwdriver shaft has a couple of mm gap to metal) Kick it over and it will spark from the shaft of the screwdriver to the block.

has got me out of the shit a couple of times.

cheers Julian

As most have said, it will be the crank angle sensor. Check with the water cooling trick before you go and kill the ignition system. Water goes on the front of the crank where you see the wiring leading to the sensor.

OK fellas, I'll try the cooling trick first.

And the fault code check.

Cheers.

Hi, I had a VR with exactly the same problem. To confirm what everyone has said, I changed the Crank Angle Sensor and I had the car for another 5 years without the problem showing its face again.
