walkinshaw wheels on my Torry

i want to fit a set of polished VL walkinshaw wheels to my LX Torana , i am running a hoppers style brakes with commodore stud pattern on the front and a commodore borg warner diff. the wheels look great but they are shaped in a way that i cant get them to sit flush up against the hub, and they wouldn't clear the caliper anyway. so i have a couple of options #1 is simply fit wheel spacers but i am worried about the legal ,safety and insurance side of things. or#2 have spacers welded to the back of the wheels . does anyone do this ??? anyone here had that done?? is it no better to weld them on ?? is the pressure on the studs any different if the spacer is made into "part of the wheel"??i would love to use these wheels but if it cant happen than so be it i'll have to get some wheels made up. here is a pic of the wheel on my car

The "welded" spacers would be the better idea
But isn't the offset all wrong and the wheels sit way in?
This effects your steering geometry and makes the car harder to steer... worse with big wheels and sticky rubber

I've seen it done but I'm not a fan of the look

Another thing to consider is the studs would have to be extra long to go anywhere near getting it right
Lots of stress on the studs and bearings
I wouldn't recommend it personally

the offset has been brought out by the front brake set up and when this is combined with the spacer the outer edge of the wheel nearly sits out as far as the guard. the wheels are only 7 inch and ive had 13x7 inch wheels on before , it was heavy but i was going to run a more narrow tyre than the 225's in the pics. And yes the studs would have to be increased in length by around 15-20 mm. but the stress on studs and bearings does concern me

8-10mm will be OK
But I would step up to 1/2" studs myself
Maybe even spring for ARP ones just to be extra safe if your planning on doing any roundy roundy track work

thats strange !! i have 15x6 stock commy wheels on there at the moment and they are close ,but the 16's seem to clear by heaps both elevated and at normal ride height (i have only tried the vl wheels not later model ones), i am guessing yours is commodore stud pattern ?? did you get custom offset wheels ??

You don't meed to weld the spacers on, just drill and tap the spacer and the rim and bolt them on with some countersunk head bolts.

As well as the longer, stronger studs ensure the rim still locates the centre bore on the disc as originally intended. This shouldn't be a problem at 8-10mm but it would pay to check.

I ended up selling the Walky wheels and picked up a set of ROH Chicanes that were the right stud pattern/offset and look great.

Thats odd, we've been running ours for years running same set up.

No issues with steering or rubbing.

Revisiting an old topic, im in the process of cutting down the 2 fronts on mine, to either a 5.5 or 6 inch wide rim.

Just chasing thoughts of anyone running skinnies on front as to what the best width would be for tyre sizes?

Hi Denny,

I don't know what tyre size to use, but who is cutting your wheels down from 7 to 5.5?

I would guess it means cutting the rim in a lathe or similar then trimming an inch off one side and welding back together?

Yes mate, a friend named Wally from Neale wheels, its what they do, he's been flipping and changing offsets for me for 20odd years now in our racetrucks and my 4x4s

He knows what he's doing..
