what are these boxes like? Weak and I believe hard to get bits for.
what are they worth? $100 max (If I wanted a $100 g/box I'd buy an Aussie)
and wat did they come out of? 4 cyl commy and UC sunbird, maybe 2850 commy and UC.

mmm i have found this,.,,,,,,
" MC6 Filipino built Torquemaster four speed with its internal shift linkage"

"Ratios in the M26 were first 3.50 (3.05 in the M20), second 2.02(2.19)and third 1.41 (1.51) fourth 1:1
"

i am guessing the ratio means quicker take off, i also read they came out on 6cyl's, the box was in a 4 door lj i picked up as a parts car. the car had a 173 in it and the bloke used it to tow stuff to car swap meets...

It would probably be O.K in an LJ 2850 streeter.(stock) But "torque master" was a little bit of an over statement. And then theres the parts problem, Dr Terry or Torana Vista might know more about availability. Having said that I would be reasonably sure there would be a few at wreckers.

MC6 was fitted to all starfires 4 and some 2850's in both UC's and commodores. Yes the ratios stated are correct. Yes, it will be easier to spin the wheels than with a 3.05 in a M20, 2nd is about the same, but third is taller in the mc6. Also worth noting is that reverse is 3.57 in the mc6, 3.05 in m20. Personally, think all reverses should be at least 4.5, makes those tasks of backing heavy trailers up driveways just that bit easier and how fast do you need to go in reverse anyway?
Have a mc6 behind my 202, its the original box and has done 350000km. My 202 is about 20-30% more powerful than stock and the box has been fine, but I dont drive it hard.
Spare parts are non existent new. Parts such as the plastic speedo drive gears are the big problem, they arent interchangeable with m20s and require removing the extension housing to get at them. Also the six cylinder drive gears(ones suitable to use with a 3.38 diff) are rarer again. It took me a full day to track a 6cyl one down for mine and end up costing me $$, as the pirate selling it knew Id wouldnt track another one down too easily. The lower tooth speedo driven gears are also as rare as.......which youd need to get the speedo to read correctly with a 3.08 or similar.
My advice, unless the price is next to nothing, go with something else.

If your after a gearbox with different ratios, try the M22 as fitted to 6cyl 1 tonners, can't remember the ratios but 1st,2nd & 3rd are close together, same strength as the M20/21 & stronger than the "Torquemaster" box.

I drove a car will one and drove pretty hard, Behind a worked 6... i recon there great boxes. Easy to shift gears... real torquey. No linkages!

If your not going hardout i think its a good box.. and if you get one out of a 4cy it should be in ok condition as the 4cy aint that powerful.

I've got a torquemaster behind the worked 179HP in my UC (135rwhp) and its done over 350 000kms... Its had a mildly worked 202 in front of it for about 100 000kms, and the 179HP in front of it for about 5000kms, still runs like a champ! I do my oil changes and what not - still no leaks from it either! Gear shift is getting sluggish, but still fine!

You could use it behind a 6cyl no worries, but if your more of a burnout and leadfoot man, get a stronger box! Mine cops a bit of a flogging, but not a great deal, and not all the time!

Expect to pay up to $100 for a great condition one, no more. If its got oil all over the outside, tell them you'll pay $25...

You might have a cracked ball. Or maybe damaged I thought they have a large nylon ball or curved Disk as a pivot for gear stick.

All that power from the big block Holden 1.9L engine. No wonder!
