The noise could be travelling up the cable from the trans end.

What noise do you mean? The box has no noises it works perfectly fine. Do you mean just general noise because the cable is in pretty shabby condition especially down the gearbox end. I think I should just replace the cable and be done with it.

The clicking noise could be from the gearbox end of the speedo cable. As the cable is hollow, the sound could travel up the cable making you think it could be near the speedo. I'm not saying that's the case, just pointing out a possibility.

Check that the cable is connected properly in the back of the speedo Wayne.
I've had and seen that to cause a clicking sound quite regularly, and cause bouncing of the needle.
It's the easiest thing to check. If it's not that, replace the cable.

Never seen a clicking noise coming up the cable from the box.

Grant..

I had that noise. I'd bet good money it's the inner cable fraying and about to break. here is a video about the problem

My speedo doesn't work at all initially, then it kicks in a couple of km's down the road and works fine after that. This happens every time I get in the car... Any thoughts?

My speedo starts to howl like a bitch at about 50 miles an hour,it's enough to bounce all the other gauges around,I tried to reroute the cable but that doesn't seem to effect it, it's a new cable to,the other thing I wondered is that I have a 5 speed commodore box in it and it's a bit longer so the cable is not where it should run but there is no sharp kinks ,my mate thinks it's the speedo head itself,I have got a few spares so I might try swapping the head itself and fitting the 120 MPH facia to an ordinary 100 MPH one if it will work ?

This is a picture of a well sacrificed UC speedo with the needle pointing out the spring, not sure if LH and LX are similar, they are fairly delicate to handle so if you decide to pull one apart and use it again,be careful.

Another area that may give problems is where the shaft goes through the body of the speedo.

Due to time the lubricant that was there may tend to dry out or become gummy, this will put more load on the cable

and gears in the box itself. The shaft in the lower of pic. shows the magnetic ring which does as described earlier

in the thread..do not drop it on hard surfaces or place near other magnets or put it near where you have been

grinding metal. The magnet itself is not just any old magnet,it has several poles or sections around it.

The shaft has a fine spline on it where it pulls out of the plastic on which the magnet is housed. There are also

two thrust washers on the shaft, one for each end.

If you swap the 120mph instrument fascia onto a 100mph speedo head you will need to have the speedo re-calibrated by a qualified instrument repairer.

Sounds like it may be your speedo cable. You don't have to have tight kinks in the cable casing to upset the operation of the inner cable. The larger the radius of any bends in the cable the better.

Install a working 100mph speedo into the instrument panel and see if the problem persists.

Hi, Ive got an aussie 4 speed in my LC Torana and the speedometer wasn't reading anything. I pulled the cable out and there was no little blue gear thing on it. Just an empty hole.

So do I just get one of thoughs blue drive gear things and Im away? And do they just push into the gearbox speedo hole?

Thanks,

Glenn

Yes Glen, although the color of the drive gear may not be correct for your car.

When you remove the speedo cable from the box, the drive cog will push onto the end of the cable. You will see how the inner cable needs to fit inside the square recess in the cog.

Bouncing speedo indication could be oil getting into speedo cable from O, quad, ring, thingy in drive gear, ended up pumping oil onto my carpet? Replaced and bouncing stopped, and no more oil leaks. Hasn't stopped the speeding fines though?

I didnt see this mentioned regarding flickering needle but when the cable assembly is disconnected from both gearbox and speedo head then the inner cable should not twist when held one end then try and twist other end. It should have next to no rotation.
