I guess the moral of the story is...... get to know your neighbours if you can, be as considerate as possible and try to be inconspicuous.

However,i do understand some people (neighbours) can just be pricks, and will cause sh*t over nothing :Headbang2:

Thats it, i wouldnt go spraying a car right next to a boundary line unless it was protected and the neighbours were ok with it. Most of my neighbours are old people and cant hear anything anyway and i can get quite noisy in the garage. Doing things to the laws is one thing but being considerate is another.

Anger continues
27th July 2010

Posted Image Daniel with one of his cars.
LAST week, The Reporter broke the news about Heritage Park's Shane Arnold, who was threatened with a fine of up to $5000 by Logan City Council just for working on his own car, on his own property.

We had an overwhelming response from Logan residents about the issue, including from Daisy Hill resident Daniel (last name withheld), who similarly received a visit from council officers.

Last year the officers visited his house following a complaint from one of his neighbours, and investigated whether he was running a business from his house.

When this claim proved false, the Office of Fair Trading were also contacted to investigate whether Daniel was also running a caryard, because a number of his vehicles still had auction numbers on the windows.

"It's the Australian thing to do," Daniel said about working on cars.

"I understand you can't be out there spray painting but I find it ridiculous you can own a car, but you can't work on the thing."

Daniel said the Logan City Council officers had told him they had to investigate complaints, but council didn't go searching for this sort of thing.

The Reporter again contacted council and was told council responded to complaints lodged by complainants and that repairs on vehicles could only be day to day maintenance and the vehicle must be owned by the owner of premises.

I like the last one best.

My local councillor - a man for the people - has said to call him straight away if they ever try and go us. :P

I find it bizarre - there is no rule saying you can't weld, drill or hammer metal, or bolt any thing to any other thing in your back yard.
But if you try and do that to any part of a car it is illegal Posted Image

If I was ever 'advised' by the council to cease and desist working on my car at home then I would start beating the crap out of a flat piece of steel and drilling lots of holes in it etc etc etc just to piss off the neighbour that dobbed me in, and there would be nothing they could about it hehehehe

Mentioned this to David Raynor tonight, as if more councils do it, it will become an issue for Rares and other retailers. He said the Logan Autobarn is one the highest grossing, so it may become an issue VERY quickly..........

I can undestand noise issues, but if you work during the day it should be permissable. As for odours, there are filters you can buy for this sort of thing. If you spray in your garage, with a filtered vent it shouldn't be a problem for anyone.

But the idea that anything more than changing a light bulb is illegal? Bloody ridiculous.

Response from council -

All is okay........
.
.
.
But it's still illegal.

BTW anyone in the Gold Coast area - it's illegal for you too according to this.......

What a bunch of morons - Spray painting is already nationally regulated. Spend my money on something worthwhile. Bet if I wanted to use the local TAFE facilities they'd tell me to get bguck'd!!

By any chance could you check out there?

Lots of restos and hotrods out that way, and I fear it may be the same.
I believe, but not sure, that Ipswich is free of this insidious evil.......

I gave them a call before I posted. So long as we comply to noise laws i.e power tools, compressors etc between 7am-7pm weekdays and Sat and not before 8am Sundays its all cool. We can spray paint but need to be mindful of neighbours if doing a whole car and need to ensure fumes dont blow all over the neighbourhood, so basically dont paint on a windy day and tarp up the shed.

Panel beating, engine rebuilds, welding, grinding etc.... All good.
