Hey Guys,

I'm just about to splash out and buy some extractors for my new motor.

I've managed to find two sets of off the shelf items that both seem ok.

Pacemakers - http://cgi.ebay.com....e=STRK:MEWAX:IT

  • Tri-y design
  • Mandrel Bent
  • 1-5/8th Primaries
Castle Headers - http://cgi.ebay.com....em=220571082544

  • Tri-y design
  • Mandrel bent - Will flow around 500HP.
  • 1.6mm exhaust grade tubing & 10mm laser cut header plates.
  • 1-3/4" primary,
  • 1-7/8" secondary & 2-1/4" slip fit.
  • Headers come with extractor bolts & gaskets.
I was initially leading towards the Pacemakers (Mainly for the brand name)... But looking at the specs, the Castle ones seem better (And are a touch cheaper)

How about fitment? Who has used either and how well do they fit?

These headers need to fit and perform well with my next motor plans (400hp+ 355) as well as the 308 thats about to go in. Hence why i'm thinking the bigger primaries are better??

I cant comment on fitment but the larger primaries would be a better option imo

I have used Castle EFI headers in my Orchid LH Torana & i used Pacemaker EFI headers in my Silver LH SL/R. I posted my experience of the fitment/quality details in your build thread.

Matt,
I used the Pacemaker extractors & they didn't fit with HQ mounts. The left 1 hit the K frame & the right side fouled on the steering rack shaft protection on the crossmember. No bolts or gaskets included either.

Thanks Guys,

It sounds like both of them throw up their own sets of problems... LH SLR both your engine bays look TRICK!

I'm not sure what my engine mounts actually are... Any way i can easily tell?

Still unsure which way to go... lol

Torana are shaped like a box (rectangle) and HQ are like an S shape or a question mark.

I fitted the Pacemaker extractors which were no hassle (relatively). I'm using the standard torana engine mounts.

Just make sure you have a few hungies spare (to get slight mods done) in your budjet no matter what brand you buy.

I don't remember if i posted this in your build thread, but my 355 EFI SL/R with the Pacemaker 1 5/8" tri-y appears to be more on par with what you're doing with your car than my Orchid car which is just a mild cruiser. I haven't dynoed my SL/R with these headers but at the forum drag day last month, which i remember you attended, it ran an easy 11.9@113mph with a 3.5 geared LSD centre that was playing up. These fitted better than the Castle headers, i use HQ engine mounts on both cars & the only clearence problems i had with the Pacemakers was around the steering coupling & the RH engine mount on the k-frame.

Thats interesting to hear mate... Fitment is the main thing i'm looking at...

Chris, I spoke with the mob that sell the pacey's down here, and they said they don't do a 1 3/4" primary... Even though they advertise one???

JMO but you need a serious 355 to make advantage of the 1 3/4" pipes. The 1 5/8" pipes will make more torque and be faster unless you use a 4500 or larger converter. Pacemake make a great set of pipes and the "cone over" construction is a real plus.

Again, JMHO

^^^^I agree, on the engine dyno my 355 made around 440bhp@6000rpm. We tried a few different sets of headers, finally deciding on the Pacemaker 1 5/8" primary tri-y for the reasons struggler mentioned. My engine has a wide lobe cam as it was initially built for a shot of N2O, so N/A it lacks torque, i think it was around 380-390lbs@4500rpm. Too larger exhaust would've sacrificed even more torque. As for ease of fitment, the Castle headers are good value for money but i had more problems with fitment/clearance than with the Pacemakers, they had to be heated & bent to clear the chassis rail & floorpan but then they fitted better around the steering. I also had to slightly modify the RH engine mount on the k-frame as with the Pacemakers. Also they are designed to clear a factory LH/LX front swaybar, whereas the Pacemakers don't. These are just my experiences, in any case, good luck with your new engine swap. Cheers Matt

Thanks Matt and Andrew,

Thats interesting about the Swaybar with the pacey's... On their website they say they fit the A9X/L34 Swaybar... I just assumed that is a beefed up version on a standard bar?

I think you have swayed me to the Pacemakers though, that's a very good point about losing torque.
