Thought i might throw this up here, a bit of a guide to hiding the wiring for the heater/demister fan in the engine bay.

This works with the lucas fan, if you don't have one you can find them in some of the HQ-WB's

The one on the left is the one you want.

Remove the 3 screws holding the fan to the plastic ducting, then undo the nut holding on the fan and undo the 2 bolts from the back of the fan which will allow the fan to be pulled apart.

Now cut the orange wire near the plug and cut the yellow resistance wire in the motor near the brush holder. Should look something like this.

The mounting plate now needs the spot where the wire came through filled. Just weld in a small peice of 1.2 milds steel sheet, and a quick sand.

Now weld on a small washer or something to hold the wiring down away from the fan.

While the fan is out of the plastic duct re-fit it to the car and mark the inside on the fire wall and pick a spot to drill a hole for the wiring to go through. ( Drill a 12.5mm hole for a wiring gromet)

A little trick to hold the thrust washer on when putting the armature back in is to hold it on with a bit of string, then pull the sting out when it's in.

Now extend the wiring and start putting it back together, put the back of the motor onto the mounting plate then fit the brush holders then the front motor cover.

Once the fan is remounted and the wiring is run through the fire wall, rewire the resistance wire and the orange power to the plug and reconnect the earth.

Hope this helps everyone...

I've seen it done on a few cars too and thought it would be good to have a how to do. I should say the yellow resistance wire is what give you the fan low speed

and if you use a fan from a HQ-WB they have only 1 wire coming out of the motor and the earth is attached to 1 of the 3 mounting screws, so need a little more work.

I normally just glue the wiring to the mounting plate, that washer idea is a lot better!

I done this mod to my hatch after i had everything chromed.

LOL I didnt think of goin the washer idea, i used tape that unfortunately come loose now the wires rattle against the fan sometimes,

Also have drama's running the fan on SUPER SLOW (1st speed) the yellow resistance wire glows red hot and starts to melt the silicone insulation. But once i switch it up to SLOW (2nd speed) its fine.

Not sure what the go is there, In saying that If i feel the need to let the breeze whisk through my hair i usually put the window down.

ANOTHER Mod i also done at the same time was...

Back wired the wiper motor and filled in the old plug hole with bog and sprayed it black, That works a treat aswell

similar process to the fan motor, takes about the same amount of time but ends up with a trick finish

Cheers

What is the reason for cutting out the resistance wire. The original wiring uses it?

He didn't, it was cut as close to the motor as possible so that the original length was retained, then re-joined to the new extended wiring
