Can't certain elements of play in a rack be removed with adding shims

Hi,
Steering rack play is due to wear usually.
The steering racks must first be understood and your intended purpose be detirmined.

The steering rack like most coomponets of a Torana are dated so those of us who wish to keep ours cars in original form will try to rebuild the original racks, rather than fit a new one which is a bit different anyway.

4 cyl racks are different though some componets are the same if some swapping of parts is needed. (rack gear and pinion are different)

A degree of mechanical ability is required to undertake a rebuild by the owner.

Few parts seem to be available to rebuild original racks but TRW Australia would be a start to get parts I suppose.

Now to your problem;

the rack is supposed to be filled with a thick oil which lubricats the bottom half of the rack, unfortunately the wearing componets are on the top side of the rack and often run dry.
If your steering rack end boots have split or been screwwed by your uneducated Steering allignment zombie then you are in for some cost in replacing the gears or the whole unit.

To simply adjust by removing shims can be dangerous if too many are removed, as the rack can jam at the full turning situations.

The rack gear itself wears mostly in the middle on the top side and once worn past a certain point little can be done to rectify this.

I usually fit a grease nipple to the top adjusting plate to make sure some some lublication is at the point of most wear.

The orther componets that wear are the rack end swivels and the rack bush which I have not sucessfully replaced yet, but it has been suggested to get a glacier bush form the local bearing shop and fit this into the original bush.

Hope this helps,

Mike

On LC-LJ you can adjust the pinion to rack engagement by removing shims from the coverplate.
If the bush in the other end of the rack is worn then the rack will need to be dismantled.
Also the tie rod cups at each end of the rack get worn and need readjusting or replacing.

Probably best to locate a rack repairer and get it reconditioned

I stripped mine down, sandblasted what needed it, painted it with POR15 then took it in to Wilkinsons to be rebuilt.

Only cost $150 to have it reconditioned.

Can't beat that!

Can you replace the oil with grease entirely hence the grease nipple

Good tip Mike

How much play if any should there be where the steering shaft enters tge housing? Mine seems to have a bit of lateral/side to side play.

Wjat is required to reduce this?

I’ve heard of people using Volvo parts to rebuild the rack. Anyone know what parts these are?
