Hi Dave

I was at Mallala the day before in the open track day in my LC .
Looks like we both cooked it at the same spot. (end of long straight /hairpin).
I'm in the process of fitting XU1 Brakes to the front and searching for a rear disk that will fit under the 13's. (RB 31's look close)
The semi slicks make a massive difference to lap times especially once they are hot. I was getting low 1:30's easily before the brakes started to die and the LSD started open wheeling.

what club are you in to be able to race in the sprint class?

I'm hesitant to go back there at the open day because there seems to be a lot of crashes caused by P-nuts not doing the right thing. and a few drag cars that had virtually no brakes!!!!

Cheers,
Adam

Hey Adam,

I was pretty nervous before the day about someone hitting me but the track day is very well organised and they have a rule of no overtaking underbrakes and also let through faster cars. After all you are racing the clock not each other. There were no crashes and almost everyone there was pretty sensible. If I felt worried about the guy behind I just let them through and focused on my time for the next lap....although I was quite slow and forever letting people through, especially at the end when there were about 30 cars on track. But next time out should be a different story, hopefully!

I have a friend at the MG car club and they were kind enough to have me for the day. I am going to join their club soon so I can go to this years events. They are about $70 a year from memory not too bad. There are 2 or 3 other Torries out there but I didn't get a chance to meet them. I think they are members of the Alfa club.

Where did you get your semi-slicks from? are they second hand?

Someone mentioned the formula ford guys have the same sized tyres I would be keen to get some second hand ones off someone at some stage.

Where in adelaide are you? PM me, i'm keen to find someone else with a Torrie who is interested in going to these track days.

Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave

I got the Yokohama Advan Semi Slicks from North Terrace Tyres.
They supply a few of the Classic Adelaide cars so usually have a few in stock ready to go brand new. I run 205-60 on 13's and they are fine.

I'm keen to head back out once I get the brakes and diff sorted. Preferably at one of the club meetings instead of the open day.
cheers
Adam

Hey everyone,

Well I just checked out this post and realized its been over 2 years since I did my first sprint day! Since then I have been occupied building houses and over the last 6 to 12 months I have been dabbling on the Torana.

Towards the end of last year I gave myself a deadline of Feb 10 to make it out to the first Austin 7 club Modern reg. I had a list of modifications I wanted to do and made sure I didn't add anymore so that I could just get it out there and have a bit of fun again, otherwise those lists never end! Then the plan was to do track days all year with no more mods.

Mods:

350 holley to 175cd triples
standard camber to 4.5 neg camber and 2.5 pos castor (just somewhere to start with anyway)
Bosch HEI dizzy
replace all front bushes, ball joints, new lowered king springs and koni adjustables
3.55 locked diff (just welded)
went to 7" rims with a second hand set of R888 still in good condition
fit sparco seat
tow loop
modify calipers with XU1 spacers
fit slotted rotors
fit high performance brake pads

and probably a few other bits and pieces I cant remember. Was on limited budget so I had to wait for cheap parts to pop up and drag out the build time a bit.

I managed to get it ready for the day and decided to drive out to Mallala, this was my first mistake...

Here is a few pics.

So...car drove up to Mallala and the car ran sweet. Got through the Scrutineer with a slight drama when my brake lights were out, replaced the fuse and they were still not working and it was the only spare I had. My spare was a dud. Luckily there were a lot of friendly guys at the track who managed to find someone with a spare. Thought i was going home early! Second mistake...

Lined up ready to go. Warm up lap went well and was just looking forward to getting used to a very different car. On the first practice lap my throttle jammed open on the boomerang straight but I didnt know this yet until I had to brake for the hairpin. Went into the gravel and the car was peeling allover the place thats when I realised the throttle was stuck. Pulled back onto the track and managed to shut the car down and coast to a safe position.

After being towed back to the paddock I fixed the throttle problem and lined up for session one, I look to my left and one of the drivers is signalling that something is gushing out from my car. Drive back to the paddock and the fuel pump has rattled loose from the block, fuel everywhere. Tighten it back up get it running and check its fine. All looks good. Clean up the engine bay a bit more and start it up again just to double check, all looks fine but I leave it running for a few minutes just to really make sure. Then I get underneath to make sure there are no other leaks and I can see radiator fluid pissing out the back of the engine and onto the clutch cover. Welsh plug I presume and my day is over. Most expensive 1.5 laps ever!

haha that was one of the filthiest days of my life, luckily I can laugh now. Although hiring a trailer at Mallala driving home took 1.5 hours and then had to drop the trailer back that day and drive back home again. That was an additional pain. Mistake 3, always take a race car on a trailer to the track...

So now the fun begins again and a few more weekends of work replacing welsh plugs and might as well do a few other tidy ups while its out.

So that was my epic day of pain

No I wasn't there.
I got an injected Indy Orange LC GTR.
I'm still finding the time/money to sort out my LSD from open wheeling, it's fine on the street so it keeps getting put on the back burner.

Let me know when you get it all sorted, would be great to see it out there.

Time/Money! I know the feeling, I had to spread the cost out over the whole of last year just to get all the front end sorted.

Hey guys been a while since my last track day. Managed to get out to one early in the year in March. Had a pretty good run and managed to knock 5 seconds off my laptimes with the modifications I had made listed above.

The engine had a few leaks so I decided to replace all gaskets and replace the camshaft with something more suited to the track. Lucky I did because the camshaft was just starting to spin off the bearings!

My uncle helped me rebuild it and I am slowly learning how to do as much as I can. Also picked up a spare bonnet had it resprayed and fitted some bonnet pins, starting to look like a race car. Got a few pics below. Next will need a roll cage.

The orange LC is Dads project, almost ready for engineering and rego. Has an injected 5lt, full commodore disk brake setup and LSD rear.

I am heading out to Mallala for a practice day tomorrow so fingers crossed all goes well and I dont have as many dramas as the last few times.  Also have a new GoPro so will post some footage over the weekend.

Few tips;

check the sump bolt - clean and put a dab of silicon on them so they don't come out or rattle loose

build a " double alternator bracket " - put two together + weld

put a clip on the oil dipstick with a spring to keep the thing in place - or remove and put a rubber extension on with a bolt in the top and hose clip.

buy a spare fan belt

buy the best front race brake pads you can afford- don't worry about the double booster - you don't need it - just press harder

keep you rear end in loose rubber and change the front to nolathane to stiffen it up

make sure that when you come in after the first run - re tension your wheels nuts - if you have a torque wrench then use this to get them even

should be running about 26 psi on race tyres cold

in between sessions - take a spanner and spanner check all the motor parts  and then do it again and then do it again and then do it again.

If your keen on further mods;

re drill the second hole down on the upper support control arm position - xu1 style

put lower springs in the front and back

cut the bump stops of both sides  of the front and back so the car can move around a bit more

replace the " shims with a solid piece of metal " once you have the desired camber

buy some second hand race  tyres off ebay for 40 bucks and fit to spinties

take the fan off - for the track you don't really need a fan - but can add a thermo on manual switch for times you need it.

Take car a flogg bejusus out of it !

good stuff

long term see if you can get hold of a romac balancer for the front of the crank

Thanks for the tips Grant really handy to know. The plan is to eventually have a group nc spec car. I am just doing small improvements every month or so to not completely bleed the bank.

Hey Baron you can just get a day permit for 40 bucks if you like and come out for a run. Great fun!

After the cam upgrade I think the old mechanical fuel pump struggled to keep up and it died.

Electric fuel pump and bigger fuel lines are on the cards before then next day out.

Thanks for the photos Andy! Could of left that last one out though!! Haha

Dave,

honestly - just put another mechanical one in. $140 bucks and no head aches.

thoes carbies will not handle pressure. If you go an put another electric one in then you need a regulator.

Old Peter B just used a standard one.

funny you had this issue as it's on my to do list as a spare part for my car.

don't go high volume or anything fancy to fix a simple problem, increase the fuel line diameter from the pump into the fuel block and this will give a better Volume in reserve rather than a standard line from the pump.

good stuff.

Thanks Grant,

I figured that in the long run I will be building another engine with Webers so while I'm setting up a new fuel line I might as well do the whole system. Will definitely run a regulator.

Do you still have the original fuel tank? Was thinking of getting one of those black Jaz fuel cells. Was looking on a site today "Ian boettcher race parts" and the tanks seem to be quite a bit cheaper than anywhere else.

http://www.ianboettc...-Gal-Black.html

Just have to sus out which one is a best fit.

Thoughts?
