Hi Bazza
I took notice of this when I restored my grill and took pics before I rubbed it back and have them on my computer at home which was fryed the other week by a storm.I do remember that that black did end on the grill and there was silver in the ditch.
hope this helps
cheers Dane

Hi mate

Thanks for that - I think I am getting close to the answer. Before I stripped mine it had black in the ditch but it had been refinned at least once before. Painting that channel with black would seem to be the easiest option in terms of masking - maybe that is why it is commonly done that way?

Would anyone else like to contribute?

Cheers

Hi Bazza,

My grill is in the process of being restored but is unrestored as it stands. I have only just taken the trim off to have it polished.
It is also a 73 bris car and the ditch is definately silver.

I was thinking of using the silver flash from the gtr wheels to paint the silver part.

What are you using?

Cheers

Peter

Hi Peter

Thanks for the info. According to Viv Antoniou's book, the correct colour is "Bright Silver" 577-15769. There is also a "Bright Silver" listed for late '90s Commodores but I don't know if it is the same colour.

Cheers

gidday bazza, the ditch in my 8/72 adelaide grill is on the sides seems to be silver meets the black 1/2 across the ditch and seems too fine edge to be a diy job, seems consistant all the way round, happy to take photos if you want,

p.s your badges for your ute will be here tommorow, will let you know

Hi Mick

Thanks for that. I imagine that the design specs would be "no black in the ditch" but the vagaries of assembly line type work could probably lead to variety of results. I can't see the workers masking up the area with tape so perhaps they used some kind of overlay stencil arrangement.

If you can get me a clear photo, that would be good, but don't go to too much trouble as I think I now have my answer.

Cheers

yer a over lay stencil sounds right, when there pumping 500 + cars a day no time for hours of masking, the more i think of it you would be correct
cause my silver to black meeting there is no lip from paint build up on top of the other to suggest tape used

Hi, yeh I know old thread but thought it deserved bumping for reference.

Is a plastic primer required for spraying my LJ's grille?
& is it more costly to get the colours mixed as opposed to just finding something
close enough in a pressure pack?
(btw, I'm broke as, even with DHS's recent $6 pension rise)

i used a tamiya polycarbonate paint ps-41 bright silver it was a pretty close match ,maybe a bit more metallic in it .went  straight on no primer.

Hi Johno, 2 mixed spray cans will set you back around $70 in acrylic, acrylic clear $20 + clear adhesion promoter is around $20 + 3 mm fine line tape about $10 a roll, so $120 to do the grille roughly if you don't already have any paint & are doing gtr style. Gary.

& that's because the r/c body paint has a plastic primer already in it.

Hi, sorry for late reply but PC"s broke so having to use the local library"s. Might see if I

can find a fix for my PC while here & avoid taking it to the shop.

i made a  mask that drops in & fits snug into the "ditch" so only need tape to hold that in place

when spraying the black.

Thanx for the info.

J
