Did early reds (149,161,179,186) all have rope seals?
Was the neoprene seal introduced with 173 & 202?
Am I correct that 173 and 202 had both at different stages?

i think it was the early reds that had the rubber seal similar to rope. then neoprene was introduced later on, with the rope being available in some red 202's from the hq. maybe someone can add to this?

Hi Rob,

AFAIK the 138,149,161,179,186 have rope rear main oil seals. The LC workshop manual describes how to replace the Rope oil seal. All Rope seal crankshafts have the hatching around the seal journal.

I can't say with any certainty if early 173 and 202 had rope seals, I thought they always used a Neoprene seal.
There is more than one type of neoprene seal. Additional to the one in your pic, GMH also used a neoprene seal that fitted into a groove similar to that for a rope seal and I have also read about a double lip neoprene seal being tested in service.

In 1973 GMH engineering department also experimented with a run of 25,000 engines comprising of 6cyl & V8's utilising a rear main oil seal made from Chicago Rawhide.

It seems that eventually GMH reverted back to the rope seal for the blue and black motors and possibly before the red motor was discontinued.

Cheers
Dave

Rope started around mid-late HQ. From then onwards all red, blue, black 6cyl, 253 and 304/308 were rope seal. Of all the earlier 6cyl engines I have ever played with (EH-HG) they have all been neoprene. Early 253 and 308 from HT release were also neoprene.

Yes, I remember that seal that replaced the rope. 1st wifeys HQ had that. We had to change the crank because of the soft thrust face. (Manual)
I don't have a pic though.

Bit of a balls up really if you look at the big picture. They should have just modded the flywheel flange and the block to accept a 1 piece seal.

Looks like some wicked wear on the neo seal you have pictured.
