i agree about the shaft carrier craig, looks like itwas made in a year 9 metalwork class. even folding up some sort of cover for it would probably be an improvement i reckon.

Thanks berro, but you spelt jerkoff wrong, you accidentally wrote God : )

Well I did a little bit more last week to the steering.

I'd love to be able to reconfigure it so it isn't using that ugly bearing and it's mount, but the kit is engineered this way so it needs to stay. I'll see how it looks with the motor and pipes in and if it's too visible I'll make a cover like what stinga said.

Anyway, I couldn't find a reamer short enough to run through the unis, and the unis aren't able to be pulled apart without killing them so I ended up taking a tiny amount off the shaft. The hole in the uni is 14.3mm and the shaft was 14.32mm so it wasn't much but enough to be a nuicance.

Once I'd cut the first piece of shaft to length I tested it to make sure it fit properly, then I chucked it into my incredibly massive industrial mill to cut in the flat spots for the cotter pins.

Posted Image

I'll show you just how massive this mill is. It's so big I nearly need both hands to carry it!!! hahahaha! It's very handy though!

Posted Image

So one shaft is now done. Hooray : )

Posted Image

To determine the length of the second shaft I first had to get a uni onto the end of the steering column. I had no idea how hard it was going to be to get the shaft out of the column, but when tapping the steering wheel off the spline the whole shaft came out with it. Sweet! I like it when every now and then something is easy!!!

Posted Image

So I machined the end of the column down and milled the flat spot in.

Posted Image

I gave it a quick sand and coat of black while it was out as it was a bit surface rusty.

Posted Image

Now I can measure the second shaft.

Posted Image

Ready to go in.

Posted Image

All done.

Posted Image

So it wasn't the hardest thing in the world to do, but it was more involved than I'd have thought a "kit" would be. Anyway, it's done now so time to move onto something else : )

I think the issue of how the bracket looks kind of disappears when you look at 3 unis plus a bearing...! I'm sure it will work nice though, function over form

Coming along well

yeh agreed, also looks like it's taking up a lot of space when it comes time to run some pipes...should be interesting!

this is my favourite of your projects, along with the monza. I always come straight into the non-torana project area looking for Dirtbag updates!!!

Yeah it's certainly not ideal but it's legal so that's the price you pay I guess : )

Hey Tim, what's your final thoughts on the steering kit? Would you buy the same one again or is there something better?

Friend has a HT we are considering converting. So we will have to modify the shafts the same as you have?

Hi Clint. Look, cosmetically there's lots of things I'd have done differently, but at the end of the day it's ADR approved and can be easily regoed as it is now.

It does feel pretty good through the steering wheel though.

G'day Tim,

If you find that the steering wheel feels a little tight then loose through 360 deg under load put the unis out of phase by 45 deg. With steering shafts that run through angles more than 10 deg this can often happen.

Nice work mate , well done.

Hi Tim

Like others I'm amazed at what you are doing with this and the Monza & even better, taking the time to put up the pics and give advice & ideas.

I thought you might be interested in the following link. Its from the South African Muscle Car forum & although a Dodge you will probably appreciate the work (and time) that has gone into it

cheers

Just had a look at that link. What an awesome forum! I'll definitely be going back for more of a look in the future.

It's been a long time since I've posted in here! Not a stack has been done but some has been none the less. The lower parts of the front guards were stuffed inside and out so they're all replaced, and all the panel gaps are set now.

The biggest changes are things you don't really see. It's getting monster power, so I'm adding 2 sets of extra rails underneath, plus a half cage as Qld no longer allows full cages (pansies!!!) and by keeping it a basic 4 point the rear seat can stay. I've also mini tubbed it so it can sit nice and low and swallow a big fat tyre without scrubbing.

I narrowed the original banjo 2 1/2 inches each side just so I could make sure it was all going to fit in as I wanted it to. I'm happy with how much room the tyre has now.

The wheel and tyre in this pic are stock HK centre in an 8 inch rim with a 245 tyre, and there's heaps of clearance. I haven't even rolled the guard yet : )

The outer rails are just to support the inner sills and the inner rails join the front and rear suspension.

Its nice to see some pretty wheeltubs instead of the ones that look like a bit of duct work that seem so popular.

The front guards were pretty crusty.

I made the tubs higher than standard as well as wider so the wheel can go right up in there : )
