Will come and say hi Dan. Hope to see Chris there as well.

I'll be up there pit crewing for Reasonably Fast Edward (a.k.a Fast Eddie) and his STP Commodore (Group A/C race) and the "worlds fastest" 1987 Suzuki Swift (IPRA).

Well the worlds fastest one that is painted like a MHDT car!!

To the doubters when this was raised after 2004.....

"Unlike 2004, we will have the correct 3.08 gear ratio fitted to the car, so she will not be revving out at 7000rpm before the first hump on Conrod straight"

So who is the driver driving the car??? Someone who raced against this car in the 70's from the description.
I'm thinking maybe Bob Morris?
Or is the wording to say raced against as in 2004...., so Skaife?

Still deeply guts us about the diff ratio to this day Red... Long story to it, but we should have not taken the advice of others, who we thought would know better... Brock was hitting 7000 rpm while going up the first hump, thankfully he did not kill the engine in the 79, that great mechanical sympathy came into play in knowing just how hard to push the old girl.
I personally think that Holden wanted the old beast to finish last that day, not a good look if Brock beat both the HRT racer and new VY SS on national TV. (Like it did on the first day we ran). With the right diff ratio it would have given Brock a better chance.. And that other chance was something we never got to get with his passing.

I hear rumours that the fellow driving the 78 this weekend wears a white suit and helmet? And he thinks that Group C is a long lost blood type? ;)

"Top Gear Australia have organised track time Saturday morning for a few fast laps with one of Australia's greatest drivers taking to the wheel of the Torana. It will be a great twist as he gets to drive the car he raced against and give viewers of the show some insight to the A9X's abilities around this epic circuit."

If you say he's in white, but raced against this car, I'm saying Allan Moffat.

I thought on the Bathurst track they always used the 2.6 gear set with the direct 1:1 fourth gearing (T10) ?
7000rpm even in small doses on a 308 is far too dangerous territory.
If they didn't use the 3:08 set in that biased 2004 shootout just how low a ratio set did they actually use?
Also a set of new racing tyres would have helped cream the standard dunnydore (although Holden wouldn't have liked that).
Have a look at how A9X went in TargaWest to give anyone a good guide on how the 30yr old girls race even against much later models.

imagine if 12 hour organisers allowed group a, group c and nc and later production cars i think was group e ???? and the road going cars such as xu1, slr5000,ss, gt,older hsv, fpv and xr6,8 and comm ss as purchased and not overly modified to mix it with the new cars .it would be very interesting to see what the outcome would be.

this has been discussed in length in the past, the 2.60 was too tall with the A9X large rear tyres. From memory the car had 3.55 gears in 2004.

Thanks Red I couldn't find the racecar discussion on overall gearing. I seem to remember Brock on the MHDT cam setup using a max about 6000rpm down conrod for 270kph. I certainly do remember when at Bathurst in the 78/79 years that the rear tyres seemed very high in profile ( I was much younger then and paid less attention) . As an example if using say a 25"H tyre, 3:08 = 6830rpm @ 270kph, using 2:6 = 5770rpm @ 270kph). A 25" high tyre at around the 305 racing width is pretty big under a Torrie.

Do you or anyone else know the full racing tyre specs used? (ie height, width, dia, wall height, compound, brand etc)

Is this the discussion Red?
In it the email to Dan Bowden says the 2004 speed comp used 3.36 final ratio.(which would limit top speed to around 135mph @ 6000rpm)
Be interested to hear what else Bowdens have played with since the car came from the 79 race. Also what they have done to the 78 car.
Be good to hear Harry Firth clear up the discrepancies in relation to the 78 and 79 gearing/tyre specs.
That's why this site is important so we don't loose facts rather than rely on myths.

Cheers for the comments,
I just need to point out that if we had of "played" with the 79 we would not have had the issue we had in 2004. If you look at it you will see the livery and drive line is as when it finished racing, not the same as after Bathurst, but from NZ and Tasmania in December 79/ January 1980. We have kept it as untouched as possible from how we received it, bar changing the fuel, oil, tyres and brake fluid. the only change I can see us making with the car in the future would be having some Jong Bloods fitted.

The 78 has had a little bit more work done on her, mainly as we use it quite a bit. Our aim was for it to be as nice to drive as she was back in the day. Basically the 79 car was the benchmark and now it is as good as that.

We are on our way now to the mountain, hope to see a few of you out there.

Cheers,
Dan
