The tanks are not galvanised, they were made from Terne plate.

 

Terne plate is a form of tinplate: a thin steel sheet coated with an alloy of lead and tin.

The terne alloy was in the ratio of 10-20% tin and the remainder lead. The low tin content made it cheaper than other tinplates.

Looks like Gal though, like old soup or baked bean cans with the same treatment as described.

They're not galvanized, they're tinned zinc. Hence why it's soft. James underneath near the rear beaver area, was the black, some more than other's mate. I've seen some xu1 tanks completely black on the underside. Gary.
