I'm serious? :dontknow:

This car has come up a couple of times over the years. The caption that accompanies this pic says this car is a GTR. I don't believe it is as it doesn't appear to have the guard flutes.

Someone mentioned in a thread that he reckoned it was an up-graded LC?

Listed here as a DNF with a collapsed wheel. http://www.uniquecar...thurst_1972.htm

Was it a "S"?

You could be onto something Rob.

I can't see any GTR vents in the guards + the car has the 'S' style rear seat and the body line stainless molds down the side.

Maybe they whacked an XU1 engine in it and went racing? LOL.

Dunno if it's just my eyes, but it looks like it has the Torana and S badges behind the front wheel...

Christine Cole is now Christine Gibson, she is Fred Gibson's wife & as I understand is very much still around. I think that J Holland may be Jan Holland, Don Holland's wife.

I don't quite understand the question. The car is simply an LJ 2850 Torana S, racing in class B in the 1972 Bathurst. Is someone saying it's a GTR.

In the 60s & early 70s the a class win was as prestigious as an outright win, as a matter of fact prior to 1966 they didn't even declare an outright winner, they listed the finishers in class order. A good example is the great Harry Firth. He effectively came first outright in class B & C cars in 1961. 62 & 63. 1965 was the year he built the Cortina GT500, which effectively won outright, but he entered & won class A in a 'poverty pack' 220 Cortina 2-door that same year.

An S is the most basic in the 6-cyl Torana range & probably the most numerous. Everyone dreamed of owning a GTR but it was expensive, so an SL was the next one down. Like most of us, if that was too dear, an S it was. S meant 'Special' which was a Kingswood level car, not S for Sports.

So an LJ S coupe is the direct equivalent of a HQ Monaro. Cool, never thought of it that way!

Makes sense though. A HK-HQ Monaro in base form was a column shift 161 (HK-HG) or 173 (HQ). Essentially a 2 door Kingswood, even plated that way as a model eg HQ 6cyl Kingswood is 0269 (sedan) or 0235 (wagon) or 0280 (ute) and HQ Monaro is 0437. So a 2 door "Special" LJ is just a smaller version of the same thing!

An LJ 2-door is not a coupe, it is a 2-door sedan. Holden never called it a coupe, as a matter of fact there are pictures of a prototype LC coupe which didn't make it to production.

I'm not sure on the exact definition, but I believe that a coupe should at least have a different roof-line to a sedan. Many US manufacturers had both 2-door sedans as well as coupes in their model line-up.

I suppose 2-door S sedan could be considered the equivalent of a base Monaro but there is one anomaly; price. Where the Monaro was more expensive than a Kingswood, because I guess it may have been more desirable, the Torana 2-door sedan was cheaper than a Torana 4-door sedan.

When it comes to the LX series, Holden called the hatchback a 'hatchback coupe' & it was more expensive than the 4-door sedan.

I understand that Doc, I was talking about roughly equivalent luxury level. ie Monaro/Kingswood equates to S Torana. It was more the S=Special revelation that I had never thought about before.

And I made a typo above. 0337 is a HQ 6cyl Monaro coupe.

Yeah, I didn't know what the 'S' meant either, until a few years ago. Like most people I just thought that it meant Sports or something.

I came across some dealer literature from the LC/HT era & it lists the S as Special, the SL as Super Luxury & the GTR as Grand Touring Rally. These virtually mimic the Kingswood, Premier & GTS trim levels. After all the Kingswood nameplate replaced the Special.

From my understanding the 2 door LJ was not available in a SL, the same degree of luxury was a GTR, there was a 2 door delux but this was a 4cylinder.

Correct Mike

The SL was only available in 4dr. I don't really think one can make a fair comparison between an SL and a GTR except to say they were both the next step up from the S model in their particular body style.

Correct. In the 6-cyl LJ range the S was available in both 2 & 4-door, the SL a 4-door only & the GTR a 2-door only.

Did I mention a 2-door 6-cyl SL ??

Did Pacific Films have more than just this one? Yes they used them as run cars but others were 2250s

I did! Finally! Spoke to her at Harry's funeral!

The funny part of it was everyone was hovering around Freddy Gibson for a chat. Christine was standing there, like a bit of a wall flower, so I introduced myself, took her by the arm and moved away a couple of metres for a chat.

We spoke about her days with HDT, the "S" she'd raced and her other endeavors. She quipped "In those days, us girls took whatever drive that was offered"

Freddy kept glancing over and the look in his eye told me he might of been thinkin: Who is that blue eyed hunk chattin' up my missus? :)
