These mouldings were unfortunately removed from my car and all the rivet holes welded up.... Ive got a full set of mouldings in complete full condition. The issue's are...

1: I need to know approx locations and qty's of rivets and trim clips around the frame.

2: How much of a mission is it going to be to re-drill and fit the rivets?

3: What step in re-building the doors should I fit these? And drill the holes?

Looks like I need approx 22 trim clips per side?

How does that sound?

I not sure on the 4 door but on the Hatch the chrome moulding has a heap of rivets along the door etc

So in saying 22 your probably close to the money. Mine holes are all welded up to, and a job i'm not looking forward to doing either.

Anything in the parts manual?

I think the LX's had the trim on the outer part of the door/window frames yeah? The LH has it on the inner part of the frame. Ill have to study the parts book a little harder I think. Would just be great to know the exact locations of each trim clip...

I dont know if I should have all the glass fitted to the doors and then try and drill holes for the trim??? Or attempt this before fitting glass etc?

Good question. You will find that the bottom trim, and now the outer door belt to suit the that trim are available again from Rare Spares (Yella's old trims were used to reintroduce them to manufacture).

I can't help you with the exact location, however I can tell you how they are fixed to the doors. Do not drill holes, as they are spot welded to the steel using an 'Easy Beat' with a specific rivet attachment, or spot welder. As a result, they should be done early on in the process (bare metal). If not bare metal, then you will need to grind back in the select locations required, feather edges, build the substrate back up, etc.

If only you asked this question 12-18 months ago, I had all Yella's chrome trims off to replace the outer door belts (which are a fantastic fit by the way, no trimming required). I'm sure somebody on here will have some naked LH doors sitting around. If still an issue, I know where there is a stripped set of doors that I could photograph for you.

Spot welded on...... Really.... Dont tell me that.... :-( The car is already painted... What am I going to do now......

So are these the rivets that are used for this application?

If you do ever get a chance to get some pics of that LH door that would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

They are not the orginal ones, but they would work, given where you are at. The bottom chrome strip screws into the inside of the sill (three self tappers from memory).

I'll see how I go next w/e with photos.

Hey Hanra, i have the same problem as you.
I have alll the stainless strips but have replaced the doors and they havent got the the little trim studs.
I bought a rivet kit and am planning to do it that way as i cant get my hands on a easybeat to weld them on.

If you turn the stainless strips over and look at the rear side you will probably see where the original trim clips where positioned
just mark with an art line and place in position on the door frame and mark off where they go,thats what I'll be doing very shortly.
Cheers

Thanks kindly for your assistance with this! This has been keeping me up at night.....

Yes, I see the lower trim is attached with 3 screws on the rear doors, 4 on the front.

Can you still purchase the correct rivets that should be used?

The rivets that I listed do they require the use of holes?

I think Yella meant they are not the original type rivets/studs as in they are not the weld on type?

Those rivets you have referenced on ebay look the same as the GMH original service replacement (pop type) rivets, the only difference I can see, from the sellers' description, is the GMH rivets were made of brass (ones that I have seen) not zinc plated or galvanised steel..

And like any pop rivet you need to drill the correct size hole to install them into.

Cheers
Dave

Ok. Thanks. Im happy to drill holes, but grinding back paint and spot welding rivets on is going to be a mission. Ive got access to an Easy Beat but Id just rather not go down that road.

Hopefully the drilled and poped rivets do the trick?

I havnt gotten any where with this as yet. I want to re-assemble the doors entirely before I tackle this. Not looking forward to it... Plenty of masking tape I think....

Hey guys. I know this is a really old thread but I thought I'd share some photos of the original doors with the chrome strips removed for others to reference. I am going down this same path and thought if anyone else is looking for the info I'd help. If anyone needs some basic measurements I can probably help too.

Cheers

The SLR stainless trims are different and go around the inside of the window frame, although the welded on studs look the same.
