Hi chaps, just been thinking about this lately. LX Torana sedan fuel tank is 55 litres and hatch is 52.5 litres. LJ GTR-XU1 is 77.3 litres. Could one put a XU-1 tank in an LX? I know it would sit above the floor in the boot but that does not worry me at all. Any forseeable legal issues?

cheers, Trent.

Hi Trent

Interesting concept, I suppose it could be possible, anything is possible just at what $$$$. One small hurdle is your fuel gauge (if you want to run the original dash instrument), the LC/LJ fuel sender units only suit magnetic gauges. The LH/LX are thermal gauges. The two different types are not compatible. It might be possible though to make a Thermal type XU1 sender unit with parts robbed from a HQ - WB ute, van, 1 Tonner fuel sender.

An HQ sedan fuel tank just sorta fits under the back of an LX. So a bit of massaging is required. I was trying to make one fit when I wound up moving house, so it wasn't completed. I got up to modifying the straps.

Don't know where the rumour started but both the taxi and the stylish racecar (hatch) share the exact same fuel tank (55litres).

Hey thats a good idea. Just went to Summitt online and looked at a 20 (75.7 litres) gallon aluminium tank with sender for $249. It requires the straps for $31.95. Postage was about $280 (not so good). All up around $550 posted. Still not a bad option though. I take it that you need to open the boot every time you need to fill it? Do you guys think it would marry up ok with the fuel lines etc etc?

A fuel tank needs to be fillable from outide the car.

Thats the only real issue, if you run an external filler you should be fine legality wise.

Cheers.

Thats incorrect information. The LX parts book confirms that only one tank capacity was used.

I have a fuel cell in my hatch that fills to the original position through the number plate area (you can see it in my "Garage")Its over 75 litres and runs all the lines that go to canister and vents. I drew it up and had it built(450 x 750 x 200mm), cost under $600. Had 4 tabs put on the sides and used nutcerts on the floor and it fits snug, cut out an original tank sender unit hold down and made a gasket and blind riverted in place, just had to bend the sender unit at 90 degrees and it works as per standard.

Yep sounds like a good option to me. I guess you would not want the fuel cell to sit to high as you may not be able to fill it up through the original filler. My guess is one that is no higher than yours at 200mm. I see RCI do one that is 7 inces high which is just under 190mm so I might look into that option.

Thanks for your advice and I will look in your "Garage."

It also allows me to fit it under the false floor still. And it holds more than enough fuel.
