I know there is that rope trick which works well? Ive never tried it though... Whats the best type of rope/cord to use? Any other traps/tips or tricks? Ive bought some sikaflex sealant.. but Ill have to check the number of it to make sure its non-hardening...

Ive used some 4mm electrical wire before, But when the O'briens glass guy came and did my last one he used some 6mm rope... not sure whats its called exactly but it wasnt the twisted sort was smooth on the surface (constant diameter)

As long as nothing is bent it's Really easy Yaself (with 2 people) to get obriens to fit one is $150 so front and back $300 which pays for the head lining and some of ya carpet.

Fitting the locking strip is the scary bit.. Put masking tape around the edges of the seals to offer some protection to the paint incase ya slip and ya best off getting the proper tool and don't forget ya lube

In the past I have used the string from an old venetian blind, and I have also used brickies string. They both work great, although the venetian blind cord worked easier.

cheers

When Ive fitted locking strips in the past, Ive used the corner of a steel coat hanger and bent it to resemble the correct tool.... Who sells the locking strip tools these days?

It is easier to fit the screens yourself than it is to ring someone up and make an appointment for them to do it - especially if there is no old sealant in the windscreen channel and rubber.

4mm insulated electrical wire is what I always use.
Be careful on the corners so you don't tear the rubbers.

I don't trust any minimum paid windscreen fitter to go anywhere near my car.

I think I changed my windscreen in the LX 4 times in the first 3 years it was on the road.

I don't repair chips - if you can fit the screen yourself, the cost of the replacement windscreen ($130 odd)dictates you just change the screen rather than pay $50 to have a chip repaired.

That tool on eBay is the one the obriens guy used on mine.

I was lucky the young guy doing mine was honest enough to admit he didn't have the experience and said he wouldn't do it and they got a older guy over the next day to fit the locking strip.

It would seem the rare spares strips are a different size to standard and I was unable
To fit in the little corner peices and the bit to cover the join

When I fit screens I run a 4 to 6mm nylon cord in the groove, you can get in Bunnings. Run the cord around the window and overlap it by about 5inches at the BOTTOM and then taped the cord ends to the screen. Before I sit the window in the opening I give the rubber a light spray of WD40 on the rubber that will finish inside the car. The WD will make it very easy to pull the screen in. Sit the screen in the opening, start pulling one end of the cord towards the corner. When you get the lower corner on one side pull the other end to the next corner. Next work both cords around the corners. By the way as you pull the cord make sure that you pull it with your hand running against the glass. In other words make sure the cord is as close to the window as possible. As you pull the cord have someone gently tap down on the glass from the outside with an open hand ,not too hard but hard enough to help the rubber fall into place. The WD will do wonders with helping the rubber in. Do each side a bit of a time and if all is good when you reach the top edge you grab each end of the cord and pull each cord towards each other.

Hope this makes sense.

Good stuff Ruts!!! That makes a world of sense. Im yet to get my roof lining in yet, Ive got to do the pillar trims first. But its good to gather as much info about this as possible.

Interesting about the chrome locking strip size and the corner pieces... I better look into that!

Yea, might be worth checking with Rarespares... the experienced window fitter said they get it all the time, guys want them to fit the corner peices but its just too tight... I didnt believe him and had a go myself after he left and mmm I guess he is right

So is the issue the chrome locking strip? Or the window rubber itself?

They told me it was the Locking strip... which I got from rarespares. I never asked rare spares tho to get their thoughts... The fitter just cut the strip so the joins are at a 45' at the bottom corners and it turned out fairly neat so I was happy enough with that. But I know your going for a more concourse restoration

Don't use the Sikalfex or you will NEVER get the window out again if you have too.

I wanna get a new headlining but dont wanna take out my rear windscreen as theyre hard to get and it appears rust free in that area. (touch wood...) So wondering, is it possible to put a new headlining in with the rear windscreen still in?

NO. The headlining wraps up under the windscreen rubber.
