ok, have just sourced a brand new heater core ( at a price lower then getting my old one recoed :) and reconditoned my heater motor, now i will fix top cover of heater box, and she will be ready for fitting. MY question to you fellow members is, do i remove bottom part of heater box, the metal tray in which it sits on, and assemble it out of car, then slide it in, or, do i leave it, then put heater core, and top cover on? Top cover, core and motor was out of the car when i purchased it, and judging by the big crack on the top cover, id say it is a tight squeeze, something the previous owner may have struggled with, lol. all opinions would be appreicated as I want to do this right. thanks

However it's done, it would have to be easier than replacing the heater core on a JB Camira. I did several of those back in the early 80's.

When I was working at the SEC, a work mate came up with a modification that allowed us to do the job in under an hour. This mod was approved by GM-H and was incorporated into the later model Camira if I remember correctly.

I have just sourced myself another top cover for my LJ heater, just wnated to know the best way to remove the little washer with the 4 teeth that secure heater flap rod? I attempoted to remove one on a old broken cover with disastrous comsequences, haha. Also, does heater core just sit in the top cover box, or is it secured somehow? my car came with heater box removed, and I just want to make sure how it sits before i assemble it his wekend? thanks guys

Been 15 years since I reco'd an LJ heater so I'm hoping my memory is not too rusty. LOL.

The core just sits in the box and is sandwiched in when you put the base plate on. The core should have a strip of foam rubber (no thicker than 1/4") wrapped and glued around it to insulate it where it touches inside the box and the base.

You should also have a thin piece of black plastic with two holes in it to slip over the pipes on the core so when the core is installed you see the black plastic not the core where the pipes penetrate the heater box .

From memory I just used needle nose pliers to gently wiggle and push the retaining clip off.

Cheers
Dave.

What is best way to remove heater core on LJ.  Seems like best to remove the whole unit?

How many nuts hold heater box base plate to firewall on 73 LJ    7  ??
