Does anyone know anything about an SL/R 5000 promotional Sedan, built pre L34 and painted to look like the HDT SL/R 5000, then later resprayed in HDT L34 colours (Black stripes each side of the bonnet) but no L34 flares. The headlamps were changed to round units and Hotwires fitted also had a roll cage. Holden sold it c1976 unregistered. Was registered and used in club events for a couple of years.
I have pics that at this time I am not sharing (no permission to do so).

I don't think Norm is still here, but anyway.................

I have had a good chat with Joe Felice and collected over 80 photos of LH and LX promo cars during my research into these. When it comes to the LH SL/R 5000 versions, there were at least two, and maybe three with one being regoed in WA, and another in NSW. There was also at least one in Queensland for a short time, but it could be the NSW car.

I think the SL/R 5000's were all the property of GMH, as were the A9X's. It gets way more confusing with the L34's as a couple were owned by GMH and a couple were the property of HDT. (They had 8 altogether, with it still debatable over how many actually raced.)

I assume that this was the first one built with it being shown to the public at the Melbourne Motor Show on the 12th March 1974. There is no roll cage, standard height suspension, standard door mirror and slightly different paint job to the race car. The press release is saying that the race car will make its debut at Calder on March 17th, but it didn't actually hit the track until May.

And this is one of two promo cars that were at the Empire Speedway in Brisbane in May 1975.

The first photo I have of one with the L34 paint job was in the lead up to Bathurst Oct 1975 with Bondy doing a TV interview in Orange.

The WA car still had the old paint job at the Northam Agricultural Show in November 1975.

The other pics are all after 1976 so perhaps a different car to the one Norm was looking for.

Shiney005, have been trying to find more information on the 4 door A9X Promotional cars as I have the car that was used in Victoria as compared to the NSW car that is currently up for sale.
Any more pictures would be a great help.Cheers David

I have that one Peter, but up until 05Torana posted above I didn't think it was relevant to the post as two of them are A9Xs and one is an L34.

Sorry guys, I didn’t want to hijack the post from the original question but Shiney got my interest with the comment about having photos of the A9X Promotional cars as well. Mine was sold by a holden dealer in Melbourne after Holden finished with it. The decals were removed but the red, black in the MHDT colours remained when sold and Swarbs put up a post some time back showing what I believe to be my car and I am hoping to find a photo with the registration number to confirm. Thanks

I am afraid that I can't help a lot with this. The four doors with the A9X paint job seem to be the least photographed for some reason, and the hatches are the most photographed. I have wondered in the past if these 4 doors weren't the promo L34's with a new paint job, but I believe the one pictured above is an A9X.

The first photo (taken 1979) is the one Swarbs put up.

This next one was in WA and in this pic it was one of five cars provided to the Indian cricket team for transport out to Wongan Hills for a game against the Country 11.

This last photo I have no idea about.

Looking a bit closer at that last photo, I am not sure if it is a pit complex or an outdoor car show. There are the two new Purvis Eureka's in the background, and that TD Gemini was also a promo car for GMH, which dates the picture after January 1979.

I have also just noticed that in the Swarbs pic the car appears to have something painted on the outside edge of the front spoiler.

Notice the Kingswood SL has PE1 rims but the GTS has N66 Rally rims? That Gemini might be a concept Gemini XX7. They made some of these in TD and those N67 rally rims were part of the package at least in TE.

Looking back it hard to believe how much they softened HZ GTS. Bloody painted bars and body coloured Rally rims plus those awful pinstripes (not in that photo). Later in 1978 to replace the Rally rims with the alloy Rally rims (like that Gemini). At least they dropped those big black letters off the side that the HX GTS had. When you see a HZ Sandman side by side with a GTS it is amazing how good the Sandman looks with chrome car and the traditional colour Rally rims, even despite the lack of fluted guards.

Just realised I have a pic of the car asked about in the OP!

PS interesting that Gemini van, it was a promo car built to guage interest in a small version of the Sandman, which became the Gypsy van sold in the TE shape.

My mate Darren just sold his fully restored pre release Gypsy to someone on the east coast, his car was likely the one in the brochures and magazine articles as it was built 6 months before Gypsy release date!
