Does this look like the correct radio for an LH?

If not, what is?

Yes, i believe so, it looks like an LH factory option Air Chief. I have three of these, two 13 transistor & an 11 transistor. The speaker wires join into a single plug that goes into the back of the radio, i've been advised if the radio is in working order & you wish to keep it so, do not switch the radio on unless the speaker is connected.

The knobs are correct for Torana, but the radio is not LH as the face looks bigger (hight wise, face should only be as thick as the radio body) and it appears to be missing the push buttons.

I noticed the absence of the push buttons to, i do know from an original LH Torana P&A brochure i have that there were three Air Chief radio options, an 8, 11 & 13 transistor. Also, here is a pic of my 1974 LH which has it's original factory fitted Air Chief, it looks very similar to your's.

Here is a pic of the one i plan to fit to my SL/R including a rear shot showing the dual wire/single speaker plug.

I wonder if your's is an 8 transistor as i've never actualy seen one, or maybe it is from another car but with Torana controls fitted to it. Have you trial fitted it to your car to see if it fits?

Brad,

The radio you show has numbers 5,7,8,10,12,14,16

The other radio is 5,6,8,10,12,14, and it has psuh buttons.

I believe the radio you show is incorrect. The Radio Matt shows is correct.

You definitely need a CHIEF in your dash Brad. Just make sure your das wears the right Cheif !!!!!!!!!!

This one says its Air Chief and looks a lot like the above pics, but the sticker on it says Philips??? Did Philips take over Air Chief back in the day?

I believe those two radios are correct for both LH & HJ series Holdens. The only difference is the knobs , the Torana ones are pictured. The first one is the basic 'manual' version & the second one is the Deluxe push-button version. I think the manual one had 8 transistors & the push-button had either 11 or 13.

Strictly speaking Air Chief is not a manufacturer of car radios, it's just the name that GM-H applied to radios that they authorised as being factory accessories. The original manufacturer of Air Chief car radios was REI, which became Astor sometime in the 60s & was in turn bought out by Phillips in the early 70s.

Just like the LJ & HQ radios, the LH Air Chief radio was available in 4 different models:-
8 Transistor - manual tuning only.
11 Transistor - manual tuning only.
11 Transistor - push button.
13 Transistor - push button.

As Dr. Terry said, the Air Chief and Air Ranger radios for our beloved Torana's (and 70's Holdens) were made by Phillips.

that last ones wrong, the two pushbutton models , i think i have worked out. I have a pb air chief and the word air chief is in the centre of the fascia and doesnt have deluxe written after it, it still has the little logos on the ends thou, i guess that would be an 11 transistor type which is perfect for a L34 as theres no need to have the extra weight of 2transistors.

I've wanted this to fill the gap around the radio for a long long time.

Fits pefectly in the dash.

The shaft nuts are often missing if buying a second hand air chief.

They're not something you can buy easily so I had some made, if anyone wants a pair send a PM.

Do you still have any of those shaft nuts for sale Arrimar?

If the LH radio only has the one headphone style speaker plug with two wires, how does it power the optional rear speakers?

The HQ advertising below shows the exact aerial (including the grey lead) that I have just removed from my L34, so they were still in service for LH Torana.
