Hi all Im looking for diff options for my Torana build ,I have been sniffing arround and there seem to be verry little options , is there any other more modern alternative or are we stuck with this big old truck diff ?

I have been told to go for a Detroit Locker but am unsure of this option , this being my first torana build and im a little green on this subject.

Has anyone gone down this path ?

$3300 is that good value ? im not sure about prices yet . what would a replacement center be worth if the 4.5 ratio dosent work .

You will need to get quotes on the cost of fitting new gears or a locker centre to the 9" case.

If you want specific components in a strong Torana diff, it will cost coin. If you're willing to compromise, you could get second hand stuff cheaper now and upgrade later. And then sell the unwanted bits.

I would like to buy a new diff as this resto has been a nut and bolt , I am not happy to compromise with second hand , I have a budget of 4 to 5k for a diff so hoping to get what I need ,keeping in mind the motor will be around 500hp .So if anyone can recomend a good local diff manufacture .

My $800 secondhand 9 inch has happily survived 18 years behind various combos including the last decade behind the 383 with drag tyres. 3.5 LSD 31 spline axles. Bought out of a torana of course!
I added commodore discs a while ago at the great expense of $220, $100 of which was axle bearing change.
More recently for the hatch I bought a new custom length housing and axles for $1100 and added my ebay special $450 3.5 LSD 31 spline centre and Its been good as gold.
You wont need exotic parts for the power you have and dont be afraid to buy used. Everything looks good after a cleanup and repaint!

Look in to it some more. Lots of conversion use existing axle out of other models to get the length so the tail shaft is not center. If you want HQ stud paten and other you may have to go billet axles. Some disc brakes can be a issues for reg’o. 500 + HP you may want 3’’ exhaust over your 9 inch some time it can be difficult. Wheels and offset you must look at. Locka locka are also good value like the true track.

The complete one on ebay is from a guy who builds them in his backyard shed as far as I am aware. He may or may not have good enough jig setup to get things spot on. That particular diff is commodore pattern, full spool and 4.5 ratio, all things I would think would probably be unsuitable if yours is destined for any street use.
I would be looking elsewhere.
The bare housing and axles seems a little expensive. I would expect a bit of a discount from his price point given its nominally second hand. I would think 3k should well cover getting you a new setup to your specs from a big shop using appropriate quality gear for your needs.

Just spoke to Diff Technics and was quoted around 5k for a new bolt in 9inch with 32 spline including disk brakes and lines ,true track ,new center using all top notch parts ,He told me good for 850hp . He was recommended to me by my usual motor mec , so I know he’s going to be of the quality I am use too .

I was also recommended to use Protrans for the T400 box also sounds like a top notch builder.

Has anyone had any experiences with these builders?

Since you said your motor would be good for around 500 ponies, you could stick to 28 spline as they are apparently good for 600HP. That should keep a bit more folding in your wallet.

As I know myself quite well and have spent lots of time on the race track, I am sure that 500hp is going to be old news to me in no time, I am building the engine to cater for some future upgrades , it also built for up to 800ish hp so I’m trying to keep it all at the potential power gain possibilities, I doubt that the difference between 28 and 32 are going to make thousands of $ of difference, what you think?

There would probably be enough price difference to make me think about it. But your call about preventing rather than curing future problems is perfectly valid.

5k sounds a bit on the high side although without detailed specs of the components it is difficult to tell if you are getting value for money.
