It was the 2BBL track pack Pacer. 209 made. The cars were identical to the 4BBL track pack, with the exception of the carbie. Hence, they had the close ratio 3 speed (2.12 first gear), modified brakes, shockers, 35 gallon fuel tank, 250 cu in engine (instead of the 245), modified internals and a few other things as well. The 2BBL's came 4th and 5th at Bathurst in 1970, whereas the best 4BBL was 7th. Chivas/Ryan almost got third ahead of Holland's XU1, except for a blown tyre on the second last lap. In fact, a lap score recount showed they did beat Holland, but the Chrysler bosses wouldn't allow John Ellis (team manager) to protest.

In the LJ XU-1, I can confirm that they had XU stamped in yellow on top of the box and near the filler plug, It was not stamped XU-1 from memory
I cannot find my picture of it at the moment, but when I do I could post it.

^^^ +1. The code stamped in up to 2 places on the XU1 Aussie M20 gearbox was XU not XU1.
Back in the 1980's I saw two XU1 boxes with XU only stamped on the top and nowhere else. However it would appear it was normal for the boxes to have two code stamps.

Hello everone,
There are pictures posted on a similar topic, yes the XU does stand for XU-1 and is listed on XU-1 the build sheets too.
It is correct that all gearboxes had a two letter identification in yellow paint, this goes back to when the smooth case gearboxes were first made, there were a number of different three speeds in 6cyl and V8 also there were several different 4 speeds too, A early 6cyl with V8 third gear, the 3.05 first gear, the 2.54 first gear and the 2.32 first gear and the V8's probably had nearly as many too. this why paint codes were needed.

The M 20 was the GTR gearbox with different ratios, first gear being 3.05 instead of the XU-1 at 2.54.
To my knowlege no M20 ever had XU painted on it, the M20 had the GL code which will likely match the HQ Holden.

XU1 gearboxes are close ratio M20's.

Can you please explain why my Aug 73 GTR has M20 on the tag and the gearbox is a M20 with GL stencelled on it which has a 3.05 first gear while my XU-1 made in the same week was fitted with a 2.54 firast gear box and XU stencelled on it twice?

My varification document from Holden for the GTR gives M20 for the GTR, and official documents as far as I recall also refer to the XU-1 gearbox being a variation of the previously manufactured V8 M21.
I cannot understand your reasoning, are you saying the majority of the documents and books published over the last 40 years referring to the XU-1 box and 308 box being M21 are actually incorrect?

Is a M22 a wide ratio M20 too? they were all produced at the same time.
