Maybe someone that knows the Guy that owned Aunger the mag and louver and car acc place in Adelaide, might be able to ask him what he knows about these Red Holden Dealer built LJ V8 that Aunger had something to do with the Holden Dealership

I will do some sniffing around, I know a guy who sold LC/LJ at John H Ellers in Adelaide, he may know something.
I can remember when Aunger was on Womma Road at Elizabeth, we used to drive past. Seems like just the other day.
Regards Pete.

I know of a red LJ GTR that Patterson Chenny ordered from GM without a drive line and it was Factory Plated L31 and M21 Box, the Car was Ordered that way to be built into a race car for Peter Brock, as he was about to start driving for Bill Patterson in 74. Once the XU2 Project was scraped the Car was fitted out with the Drive line and sold though the Patterson Dealer Ship in Ringwood and sold to a guy that lived in Tullamarine, It was then sold in the early 80" s to Paul Briva lived in Fitzroy, he owned the Car for about 10 years, During that time Paul almost wrote the car of a Accident on Bell st were he ran into the back of a Gemini at 100 MPH Killing one of the passengers, The LJ has repaired 2 years later after paul got his licenes back, About 12 month after that it was sold to one of Pauls Mates Larry Donohue,The Cars Rego was LJ 308, I dont know where it is today but it is out there somewere.

Could that mean that a percentage of XU-1's on the Warranty Vin listing that do not have a engine number recorded were ones ordered without engines and may have been dealer fitted with race engines or V8's rather than simply missed listing in the first service?

XU2308 I wonder if you herd of my brothers old 308 V8 XU1, it was installed at Davo's Dyno in Canberra 1972, he had trouble registering it in Canberra and took it back to Adelaide where our parents lived and got it certified there. It was a Wedgwood blue XU1 with a black vinyl sliding roof (which I hated). He sold it to a Canberra guy in 1974 and he had removed the sun roof and re painted it, also he got personal number plates of XU2 308 (ACT plates). have not seen or herd of the car in over 15 years, don't know if it was sold or in someone's shed, have a couple of pics in a photo album of it, should scan them and put them up.

Came across a story about a Red V8 LJ XU-1, that ended up in Melbourne at a Rolls Royce Dealership (I.H) for those in the know
The LJ XU-1 had 14" Sprintmasters, Hot 308 V8 Engine and 4 Speed etc etc, the Car was Built by Ron Hodgson Racing in Sydney, they couldent get it rego in NSW, they took it to ACT to get it rego, its ACT rego number was YES308, they tried to transfer it to NSW rego, but was not on, so they sold it to a Vic Wholesaler and ended up at the Melbourne Rolls Royce Dealership.
Happened in 1972 i believe

Hi Al, this is interesting. I have a contact in the ACT rego dept, will see if I can do a check on YES 308. Did ACT have personalised numbers back in 1972, as I presume YES 308 was not a random issue number.

Gday Al,

Have done some checking on ACT reg YES-308. ACT reg archives only go back as far as 1975. To find an earlier first registered vehicle it needs to be still registered in 1975. But nothing could be found, so car must have gone from ACT by 1975. The first record of YES-308 was in 1991 when it was reissued & attached to a Ford Fairlane. It was reissued again in 2005 & was attached to a 1970 LC Torana which came from NSW, with a 186P engine no. It is currently attached to this vehicle & was last registered in 2009. I was hoping that the red XU1 in your story may have been my car, but another dead end.

I am still working on the Adelaide dealer built cars. Will let you know when I have some info.

Regards Pete.

Mike
i know of two SMP Cars that were from Victoria, and there original engines are on the Warranty Vin listing, but both of there engines were never ever rego in victoria ever ??????? i checked with A.O.M.C and Vic Roads Archives.
One of them was not rego for 13 months, from brand new, then gets its first rego as a 308 V8, 13 months later, and it was at Kevin Dennis Motors new cars yard in Bridge road Richmond Victoria, but on the warranty vin list, it was sold from Smiths of Geelong ????
Now there could of been a dealer swap thingy going on and Smiths of Geelong took the credit for the sale, but Kevin Dennis had the car,
Now the Adelaide Dealer Built LJ V8's
they would of been sent to the dealer as 6 Cyl's and there 6 Cly engine and box removed and the dealer would of got a brand new V8 Motor and box and fitted up, so u would think the 5-Adelaide Dealer Built V8 LJ's there original 6 Cyl should not be on the Warranty Vin Listings, but who knows after the two SMP Cars that were in Vic in 1972, as there original engines are on the warranty vin listing, so all abit strange

My friend has a Tangerine XU-1 that was sold by Kevin Dennis Motors in Aug 73, and it never had its engine number recorded, I wonder if anything unusual happened there?

Mike

Hope I haven't confused you, The two XU-1's I was referring to were, the first pink one other than Larry's sold by dealer 162, Attwood Motors in Perth if I have picked the right one, the history of this XU-1 is not known except that it has had a race history, going by the jacking dents in the chassis ralis and bent floor where they missed and!

The other one is a Aug 73 XU-1 in Tangerine, this is the one sold by Kevin Dennis Motors and from what you say might possibly have had an interesting history as well as the floor pans were all beat up pointing also to a possible race history, and when the engine number is not listed it makes me wonder?

I do know of another Tangerine XU-1 ( within the last 250 ) built 23rd of July that was stated by the previous owner as having been serviced by Ian Tate, this XU-1 is approaching the final stages of restoration now. sold dealer 437 ( Reg Hunt )?

Sorry I think I could have picked the wrong one, looks more like the Pink XU-1 was sold by dealer 827, I dont have a name for that one?

The Pink car that Bayside Motors Frankston had was wraped around a pole by one of the Salesmen and then wrecked out, A freind of my worked there in the 70's and still has the Sump out of the Car at home..

Has anyone been able to do a Rego check on vic, LJ.308 that I mensioned ?. The Plates where handed back to Vic Roads around 1981/82 by the Police after the smash that it was involded in, I dont know why but after the Smash the Car was given a Unroadworth Sicker by the Police, Back in those days I you diddn't get a RWC with in so many days the Cops would come around and remove your Plates and Cancell your Rego, Because the Car was Damaged so bad , Paul had no way of getting the Car fixed in time.

Talking about Kevin Denis as Special Cars , A another Freind of mine has a HG 350 Bathust Monaro that stared it life as a GMH Test Car and the is was sold though Kevin Denis Motors
