I recently had a LJ GTR with a Holden V8 passed here in WA.

Part of the approval / inspection process included a certified weighbridge slip stating the actual vehicle weight, which would go onto the Certificate of Variation and new registration papers.

Although there may be some anomalies with the weights quoted above I was pleasantly surprised seeing the weight of 72 GTR, V8, Trimatic and 9 inch came in at 999kg!

More importantly the rego fees for the V8 are less that my other 202 LJ GTR - work that out!.

Has anyone else got weigh scale records for there LC/LJ V8's?

What size holden V8?

Who was the engineer and where was the car registered?

Was the car previously registered in another state with the V8?

The weigh bridge slip was probably required to determine the new rego cost. It is my understanding that rego in WA is based on vehicle weight. The weight used for rego before the engine swap was probably 1098 kg.

Under the NCOP it would have no effect on the maximum engine size allowed.

If the actual vehice weight could be used then we would all fill our Toranas with lead and then a blown 454.

im building my LC with V8 and my engineer has started my paperwork and said to put some bags of cement in the boot wen i go to weigh it at weigh bridge. Plus with the chassis kit, roll cage etc it gives it that extra weight for weigh bridge to pass the power to weight ratio.

I think you also need to factor in that kerb weight is more than tare weight. All mods are now taken from tare weight. Tare weight is car plus 10 litres of fuel.. Kerb weight is car plus a full tank of fuel. To get the kerb weigh from the largest weight listed above 2515 Pounds = 1036kgs you would then need to take away approximately 40kgs for fuel weight. Brings you back down to the figures of 1096kg that Dr Terry quoted. This is how it is applied here in ACT and according to the NCOP. In ACT you can't put a 308 in an LJ.

Hope this clears things up.

NSW used to be the same(I think it's changed). You could fit a 306/307cu engine, but not 308.

use a 308 with 304 engine number. And if they asked just say u converted it over to carby. Ive done the opposite, ive put 308 numbers on my 304 so i dont have to do emissions test etc. And the paperwork is already half done with the engine number already recorded and passed.

LJ's are even lighter than WRX's
the Red 308 V8 is only 22 kg more in weight than the Red 202 motor, so whats the worry with weight these enginners have, i cant see what they are worried about, long as brakes can stop it

This might help.

http://www.uniquecar...cifications.htm

Not the way you'd hope though I think. This page is for people how return vehicles to concours condition and I'd think that they would have all the info from the manufacturer.

None of my business, but why not just put in the largest legal engine and skip the heart ache? With the info I've got now from the table I think the lj might just end up with a blown 161! Or maybe just some 4.2L engine. That sounds like a lot of power for such a little car to me.

Cheers

Yeah, I tend to agree, mine (lc 4 door) with factory 5L, T700, chassis kit, steel wheels, full tank of fuel and me (80KG) came in at 1360KG. So actually the exact same weight as above.

Well if we go off Canberra RTA from my LJ GTR 6 cyl rego papers that say my TARE weight is 900kg, well no wonder a LJ wont pass the NCOP in ACT,  they have the 6 cyl LJ GTR at the same weight as a 4 cyl LJ ?????????????   Please Explain lol

Dr Terry

Can I please have some information regarding the original sourced documents for the LC GTR XU-1 Kerb Weight of 1102kg.

Yeah, I was going to ask a similar question.

What do you need to know ? I have the kerb weights of all LC/LJ variants in the appendix of my book & could provide copies of original source material if required.

Precisely what figures do you need.

Dr Terry

LJ XU1 Curb weight was 2440lb (1107kg). This is with a full tank of fuel though. This is from the August 1973 revision of the Engineering Technical Specifications. The January 1973 revision of the same document had the same 2440kg in it. As was the June 1972 revision.

LC XU1 Curb weight was 2417lb (1096kg). This is from the LC XU1 supplement to the LC Engineering Technical Specifications, dated June 1970 revised September 1971. The LC Press release stated "Approx. Kerb Weight" of 2430.1lb (1102kg). Not sure why they increased the XU1 weight to an APPROX and higher value for the Press Release as it was dated later than the Engineering docs. It might have been a way to undersell its performance potential - one of the predicted questions with pre-prepared answers for the Press was that the XU1 was only 14.3lb per hp whereas the GTS350 was 10.5lb per hp. However that is only a small decrease in lb per hp.
