G'day All

My missus's Hatch is a B&B, (budget build) and I have sprayed the door trims black vinyl spray but the plastic strip has lost a lot of its plastic chrome finish.

Any ideas on how to get that chrome finish back ?

AND no, I do not want to send them to a u-beaut retrimmer as there is money to be spent elsewhere that is more important.

Regards ... Barry

Pretty sure you can buy it on a roll just the same as pin strip, maybe try your local panel beating and spray paint supplier.

Two ideas that sound like a plan as I have to take the missus's Hatch back to the spray painter on Monday for minute touch up job on the respray.

Thanks .,.. Barry

Yep, I've got a roll of chrome self adhesive tape approx 12mm wide that I found at an art supplies, probably 25 years ago though.
Did the chrome strips on my XU1 door trims, seems to last ok if you don't pick at it. I found the best way to install it was to remove all old chrome finish, carefully prepsol the plastic strips, carefully scuff the surface of the plastic strips with fine sandpaper and prepsol again.

Hi Barry

SAAS product is till available from Autobarn. I did the LC GTR trims with SAAS chrome pinstripe, Also ebay from hobby stores in the US, chrome pin stripe is available.

As Dave says, prepsol helps it stick. It's hard to get it to go around tight radius, straight is easier and stays on well.

Would these work? I don't have my car nearby to check the width of the factory chrome moulding on the door panels, but they come in varying widths.

Hi,

I think 7mm would go close, I used 6mm tape on the GTR trims, but it was not quite wide enough,

The products in those ebay ads is more like the mylar chrome windscreen strip or body side protection moldings not a pin striping tape.

Hi Dave

That's correct, you would need to remove the original strip or part thereof to fit this.May well be a better option that tape over the top.

The 7mm strip is 2.5mm in height, so quite feasible to use, once original strip is removed in part or full.

Hi Simon
Question is though, is it possible to remove the original strips without damaging the vinyl trim? I've never tried to do this so don't know if it could be done.

Cheers
Dave.

Hi Dave,

Not too sure, I have ordered some of the 7mm strip off ebay and will have a go at some old LC S trims I have,

Will be a few weeks, but I'll post up how it goes,

Hi Steve,

I think it would be, luckily the LC S trims are straight,

Even adding the pin stripe tape to my GTR trims was difficult getting the corners to look as they should,

Have you thought about going to a signwriter and getting chrome sticker from them?

There will be lots af wastage but the stuff probably isnt that expensive.

1 metre or so should do a whole car.

Cut it to a basic shape then apply it.

Then trim it up as needed.

No problem with corners then.
