Apparently it's happening:

 

HQ496 YES 'Running on Empty 2' is happening... I'm doing it! ... ( Just joined this group and seen your 4 year old post ) ... I've been steadily working in the background on ROE2 ( I worked on the original film ) for many many years while making a living working on other people's movies and building lots of bits for theme parks. 2017 I will announce the official start to the development of ROE2 and work towards getting all car loving Aussies behind it. ROE2 is a sequel to the original jumping in time 34 years from 1982 to present and is set with some of the original cast still living there petrol fumed lives BUT with way more extreme action and car eye-candy filling storyline. YOU are getting this info first!!

Geez I haven't seen old Max for years, he used to be no less than an Aussie icon, the other role that immediately springs to mind is Tomas in Midnite Spares... "Up to shit bonza" is still today a standard response for me when someone asks how I am, gets some strange looks!

 

Should'a got him to write "Green is nice" across the glove box and sign it. Be a great talking point at Toranafest!

I just ran across this old thread, six and a half years later, did I somehow miss this movie release that was definitely being made?

 

I hope I did because I would love to see it.

Did I somehow miss this movie release that was definitely being made?

 

They have a facebook group, from their page dated 26 May 2018:

 

Filming at the earliest would be in early/mid 2019 and mainly in SEQ with hopefully some filming in or near Sydney Melbourne Adelaide Perth Winton (Qld) Townsville and Alice Springs
