Hi

It's just a mechanical pump - you push it in, it returns, you push it in again etc. There are tiny rubber valves and springs inside with a large dome shaped rubber diaphram.

If it has 3 hex head screws holding the rear plate on then easy to dismantle.
If no heax head screws then the rear plate is glued on.

Hi Jason... I think there should be two tubes into the back of the switch. When you press on the switch it Pumps water ..
I have seen the " insides " for sale some where.

Yep that's the sealed one. They are said to be a non serviceable item.
For sure there will be some smart cookie out there that has successfully dismantled one, repaired it and put it back together.
Might be better though to try to find the later wiper /washer switch with the removeable backplate. They were introduced into production around March 1973.

Hi

These are nearly impossible to find in good working order - this is why so many LC LJ owners have converted to electric pumps.

Inside there are 2 very small springs and 2 equally small rubber valves. The springs rust away and the rubber valves perish and no longer seat correctly. I have bought about 5 of these on eBay and only one was working anything near correctly. The sellers always say that they are working fine, but the tension they are feeling when the button is pressed is only the resistance of the large rubber diaphram. Rare Spares sell this dome shaped diaphram but not the very small springs and valves. Some of these pumps have been sitting around for 30 years with rust slowly eating away at the springs.

I managed to cut open a couple of the sealed types and put what parts that were ok into a dismantleable type. It works ok - but for how long?

If buying one on eBay or elsewhere, make sure that the pump has actually been tested using water and hoses - not simply pressing the button to see if it returns.

These are one of the hardest LC LJ parts to source in proper working order.

Cheers

I have converted mine to electric without any visible evidence.. modify the switch by puting a "push type" switch behind the wiper pushswitch & installing an electric pump under the dash. Connecting it up to the tubes from the water bottle to the spouts.

will try & post some Pic's if interested tomorrow.

see my wipers are not working and i have backtracked it to the switch... the switch is open circuit.

I dont need the washer 'pump diaphragm' to work as i have a separate switch under the dash to activate the washers.

i just want to fix the electrical circuit inside. i have got nothing to lose so im going to open it up

I pulled apart the switch... and put it back together and its working 100%... i didn't really clean anything but i removed the rear plastic lip using long nose pliers and then i was able to slide all the parts out

I have repaired washer operatiion by removing the one way valves and addining an inline non return valve to each waher line. Valves readily avalilble through parts outlets.
