Hi all I am in the prosess of putting a mild 350 into my lx and I need a box. Muy mates have some t5 gearboxes for sale but i dont know weather they are ford or holden and six or eight. How do you tell and what would be the best option and most cost freindly??

the differences between them all are basically with the imput shafts and shifter location, for an early holden a Falcon one has the shifter mounted forther forward and will line up better with the factory console and floor hole, generally the ford ones are pretty cheap and personally I would be rebuilding it and sticking in the correct imput shaft at the same time.

a mild 350 chev is about the Max I'd be putting infront of a T5 personally.

i have done it the expensive way by getting a holden V8 box, and now needing to either cut up my floor and do away with the console or having to buy a ford rear housing to make it line up properly, I wanna keep my console.

if you are mechanically minded you could have a crack at rebuilding one yourself, the workshop service manual is available as a pdf online. something I wanna try with my next one

Is there a measurement from the front of the box to the shifter and is there a measurement length of the front input sharft for the ford for option??. Which modle ford is the best to start looking??

I spoke to Dellow conversions about this for my LX and was told any of the X series falcons such as XF up to the very first of the AU falcons will fit well. Not sure on the shaft lenght but if you ring them they would be able to tell you.

You'll need a press to do the whole job but its pretty straight-forward and becomes a whole lot cheaper when you only have to pay for parts. Go for it

Get the numbers off the side of the box
Theres plenty of them
One most likely starts with 1352 ....
Then use the internat to search for the box # and it might even tell you what it came out of

Or post it here and I might be able to find it for you in our parts cattledogs

yeah I have had a quick look through the manual, looks simple enough, getting on a press is no big deal to me.

I have found pages somewhere stating what part #'s are from what vehicle. it amazed me in the range of cars they came in, even 4x4's, it spun me out seeing one with a transfer case attached lol

Lots of floor cutting depending who you speak to

Look at the yanks thread... he's got some good pics of it and uses a standard console

from my limited understanding its again a matter of what exact box you use, the aftermarket T56 is supposed to be very retro fit friendly, but is pretty expensive in comparrison to a reco T5

Hi thanks for the great input. Are the t5 out of the EA on any good or better than the XF they appear to look different??

So you want to stick a stout 350 infront of a 6cyl T5 ?

Not sure it will last long ... but if your rnning a banjo and light feet it might get to the end of the driveway... lol

T5 might not be your best option here ... they are good enough... but not rated for big HP

Any World Class T5 is very much the same box whether factory installed behind a V8 or six, only the ratios differ. The comment about higher torque engines still holds true though, they're not exactly bulletproof.

I'd personally use a R154 Supra box behind a stock motor

Can still buy them new... still going to set you back but they are a nice box
You'll likely find a TKO would probably be overkill for about the same money
Choices... are personal

What are the tko boxes out of ??. As the 350 has a little bit done in the way of cam and copression.

the TKO is an aftermarket box, very nice, although I'd consider one to break the bank, last I looked it was 3k for the box alone, then you need bellhousing etc to fit it.

Find a T10 ?
Again not fitted factory to many cars ... unless your in USA

Floor mods are minor but required to clear linkages

Richmond Super T10s about the same price as Muncies for a brand new box, US$1700 odd plus shipping plus bell housing etc (but these and TKOs would be a bit easier to find housings and yokes for). I adjusted the linkages instead of the floor, just fits

Might just scrape in with $2k on a S/h box

Dellow make conversion kits to make them fit

If you want to spring for a new box... they are still available from Toyota... but don't buy from them direct
