I have a red 308 engine with standard bosch "points" distributor. I have been considering changing to an electronic set up. I have a number of options including replacing the distributor from an early commodore, a new unit via Ebay but with possible doubtful quality or retain the original unit and just replace the points with an electronic unit with a Pertronix Ignitor or a Crane XR-i.

Interested in what people think of my alternatives. Has anyone used the Pertronic or Crane replacement units and if so which model and what coil did you used. Also is there any other brands worth considering.

Steve

The Pertronix Ignitor works fine, definitely a good option if your dizzy is in good nick. Use whatever coil you like, I believe they are good for a full 12V coil from memory

There was a drop in unit from Bosch that I've used with 100% reliability since the late 80's. Not sure if it's still available though.

Pertronix are fine. No need for anything else. Ignitor one will work with a stock coil. Ignitor two or three will run down to a .6 ohm primary on the coil but not sure if they make anything other then ignitor one to suit Aussie Bosch dizzys. Buy from the USA, it's cheaper and postage is quicker then Aust Post.

I'd just get a blue or black motor dizzy and coil. Fit a new module, and bridge the start and run wires at the ignition switch.

Simple and reliable and cheap.

To make it look stock, use your original dizzy cap and leads, XD-XE Cleveland rotor button and XD-XE coil. Or use the Commodore/WB HEI coil with a short spark plug lead as the coil lead (these have a post on the coil, XD-XE HEI coil has a socket like original points coil).

The Pertronix cost $94 incl freight from the US. No mucking around needed.

Far easier to ivy this Gene:

https://www.sparkplu...e-compatibility

Bolts straight in, used all original red V8 leads.

Just have to put the vac advance module 90deg anti clockwise from where the points dizzy goes. Plus remove the ignition switch and bridge two terminals.

Also need better plugs or at least open the gaps up on the old ones. I bought BP5ES-11 and opened the gap to 1.2mm.

Looked at rebuilding an original points dizzy. By the time I bought new cap, points, condenser and rotor button I was up for over $100. I know these are Chinese but so far all good.

Hit up old mate for the Pertronix and you’ll be set.

Sourcing a genuine bosch electronic dissy can be fun.

Rocking horse manure.

I ended up going MSD. So if you can retain the original dissy with the plug in device - go for it.
